re: Here's your hat, what's your hurry?

Look, maybe it would be easier for all of us if you would present us with "Rathnait's Official List of Whom it is Okay to Write Negative Things About and Those About Whom all Negativity is Forbidden."

Clearly it's a-ok to trash really hard working actors who are dedicated to the theater, like Nathan Lane, but not latex enhanced lip synchers like your dear Ashlee Simpson. You know what, when I've seen Nathan perform, I think I don't really care about what got him to the top of his game, whether it be rumored diva attitudes or what. It's not even my business. What I care about is somebody completely dedicated to his performance.

What's really hard to follow is why, when other people do it, it's "bashing" and you call them on it. But now that I've done it back to you, you get all, "oh you're Mr. Charming." All I'm asking is to figure out what the hell your internal logic is about this issue. Unless there really isn't one.

I can't vouch for that, ck, but I will take your word for it. re: Here's your hat, what's your hurry?

And Namo, why can't you get off that?? Did Ashlee turn you down for sex?? Or did Stritch?

Which reminds me of the time Ginger Rogers left the London cast of "Mame" after a year and her generous gift to the entire orchestra was one box of chocolates.

Of average size.

Is it standard practice for a departing star to provide gifts to the cast/crew/orchestra? That could get crazy on a major show. I'd just throw a party with an open bar.

The best ever parting gift was to Bebe Neuwirth from the London company of Kiss Of The Spider Woman though. Anyone care to guess what she got?
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

They gave Ms Neuwirth a used condom. She makes Nathan Lane look like Sandra Dee.

pop - they did??? I can't even imagine that. Wonder how they elected the lucky person who handed it over.

I think one of the crew left it in her dressing room while she was on stage. And yes, they did. This is the woman though who, in one of her many many tantrums, kicked her dressing room door of its hinges. To say she was loathed is putting it mildly.

For certain instances. For example, stars should be generous to their dressers, they carry around sweaty clothing. I've seen some major name stars give zilch to their dressers.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

One of my better friends in the business is a dresser on B'Way between gigs as a very successful actress. She's put up with some very interesting people. Many of whom assume she knows nothing about the "craft".

Yeah, a lot of dressers are retired dancers, too. The backstage stories are often more interesting than the show onstage.

Re: stars giving closing night gifts to the cast, the wonderful Eve Arden was brought to Australia to star in a famously terrible production of "Applause" in the '70s. The producer absconded with the profits, never to be seen again, and Ms. Arden paid for two weeks salary for the entire cast.

I agree with ck, although that is a particularly disgusting story, Beav.

re: Here's your hat, what's your hurry?

WE had a leading man stinking up the joint in a big musical recently...he was a stand-up comic who had never done a book show so he really didn't know how to behave. His dresser got so fed up one night , he locked him in his dressing room at interval and said "Listen honey, I'm the best in the business and you won't find anyone better, so you'd better get your s**t together or I'm gonna take you DOWN!" After that, peace reigned supreme.
