Jerry Lewis will be honored tonight at the Oscars with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian award. I do not know about you but I cannot wait for the montage.
He is a nasty man. I had the displeasure when Yankees was in town a few years ago. I will be taking my traditional Oscar poop during his segment. He makes Jerome Robbins look like Mother Theresa.
I read two books about him & Dean. The book about him was damning called King of Comedy. The other Dean & Me made him out a little better & it was nothing but his admiration for Dean & without Dean how he would have been a nothing.
He has done great work for MDA so remember him for that. My brother in law saw him in the can during DY in NY while he was doing a # 1. He said he really looked ancient back than.
He could make me laugh till I cried - and do so far more often than any other human being I've ever known. For that I am grateful and I wouldn't miss the awards tonight.
Martin Short ( who was famous for his impersonation of Lewis on SCTV) interviewed him when Lewis was the honoree @ the Banff Festival. He had to sit there while Lewis gave his opinion the "women simply weren't funny". Short tried to ameliorate sayin "Well. Lucy... " and Lewis interupted him saying "I never found Lucy that funny" You could hear gasps in the audience. Tracey Ullman later commented on Lewis w something equally dismissive of him ( as he had been of her and every other commidienne). Lewis is a very insecure individual who can only build himself up by denegrating everyone else. Sad . Really sad.
I have no idea if he was always like that but he probably got taken down a peg when his TV show failed. Than went his cinemas & his films started tanking.
I heard that remark about Lucy & wonder if he was on drugs at the time.
His film clips were sparse & most of the tribute was for MDA. He may not make it to this years telethon. If he does, it will be a few hours at best for him & I really doubt he will be on after this year.
