i have to thank hullary and actually e-mailed her to do so for helping me correct a glaring insufficiency in my profile as a red-neck bigot and champion of intolerance. i did not know anything about this ethnic stereotype regarding gas station owner/operators. fortunately the flap that ensued after what i saw as a hilarious comment has taught me a crucial new stereotype which i can now whip out and brand upon those deserving ethnic minorities as i see fit.
honestly i did think the comment was hilarious just on it's face: the idea that ghandi was just some schmoe from st. louie. but when i told some more enlightened folks about it, they were shocked and dismayed to hear that she would have stooped to such callous language. the whole incident just reinforces the idea that hillary is the best politician on hand today. i have such immese respect for her, even while i disagree adamantly with her on so many, many issues.
of course, this is an issue of sensitivity. while i am quite callous and insensitve to the feelings of others, i am told that racial stereotypes of any kind are frowned upon in edumacated circles. to indians, several of whom i know from work, this was an insult equivalent to suggesting that martin luther king jr. was a drug dealing pimp, "you remember martin luther king, jr., he ran a string of ho's and sold meth down memphis way." the only reason the flap is not louder and more unified is that the indian community is not nearly so vocal and well organized on the political front as some other minority groups.
all that said, it's still funny.
