Anyone seen this movie? Any opinions?

Posted: 6/15/07 at 10:37amI thought the movie was just another semi-exploitive "oh dear God what's happening to our children?" melodramatic hand-wringer with some really great performances.

"saw" shouldn't be past tense.
Has anyone seen this movie, or, did anyone see this movie.

Posted: 6/15/07 at 7:00pmIt was written by the girl who played the bad influence best friend. It disturbed the hell out of me. I did find it all all melodramatic. I mean, she was THIRTEEN. Why did the mother have no control? And what was that, "No panties, no bra" thing about? I wanted to kill the kids and beat the parents.

Yes, I've seen it a few times. I feel it's far from a perfect film, but I enjoyed it nonetheless (as much as one can really "enjoy" this type of movie). Strangely enough, it has all of the elements of a movie that I'd dislike, so I can't pinpoint what even makes me like it. I do think that the camerawork is very effective and, in a vague sense, mirrors the storyline.
I think the audience is meant to experience that "God, they're only thirteen, control them!" feeling, but I felt the movie effectively showed that some parents are too caught up in appearing cool and nice to their kids to put an end to their wild behavior before it's too late, or in some cases, simply don't care the way in which we expect parents to care.
On another note, I thought the "no bra, no panties" line was a combination of a tactic to weird the audience out and a line meant to show how outlandish and strange these girls were when drunk and/or high.

Posted: 6/15/07 at 8:39pmThank you Jerseygirl! I watched this movie with another friend who's also a teacher, and we both decided it was a perfect example of bad parenting! If she had been her kid's mother rather than her friend and tried to be the "cool mom" maybe her kid wouldn't have been such a mess. I basically saw it as a warning to parents of teenagers.

Hunter was fabulous and completely deserving of her Oscar nomination.
Evan Rachel Wood was equally brilliant and was most definitely deserving of an Oscar nomination.
As was the writing, directing, editing, and film itself.

Posted: 6/19/07 at 5:11pmI thought it was an excellent film and that there is a lot of truth in it. Especially when I see how teens behave around Chicago without their parents. I saw the blame as 50/50. Yes, there was some bad parenting going on, but when a 13 year-old girl feels the need to lie, sneak around, and hide stuff from her parents, she knows she's doing something wrong. Bad parents do not always mean bad kids.
