Hotels near NYU under $100/night

Okay- I am overwhelmed! Anyone know of hotels near NYU or even in New Jersey that they would recommend? Trying to book online is so confusing! Coming up the end of August. Please help! I'm taking all suggestions and sifting through! All suggestions (and your time to respond) are very much appreciated! Thanks!

Check out the YMCA West Side (right off of Columbus Circle). It's not as sketchy as it sounds. I've stayed there numerous times and it's a gem of a deal!

Found rooms for $92/night:

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Thanks Capn! I looked at the site but it looks like they only offer bunk beds? The price is great and it doesn't look so sketchy. I just didn't know if the rooms were for a couple!

They have different kinds of rooms. I have stayed in single-bed rooms and bunk-bed rooms. They also have double-bed rooms which are a bit larger in size and thus cost more.

The accommodations there are very basic. Bed, TV, AC/Heater, desk, lamp, closet, chair. But that is the most basic room. And their bathrooms are community bathrooms however they do have upgrade rooms to private bath.

You're really better off trying to figure out one of the travel sites; it varies widely depending on availability. I did a quick search at Hotels.com for New York and $0-$100 price limits, and got 15 options. It really depends on what your personal needs are.

Hotels near NYU under $100/night

Thanks! I'll be coming in on August 28 and leaving the morning of September 4th (Sat - Fri night). I have been on all the travel sites. What's confusing is when I read the reviews- half are bad and half are good. I was hoping someone would have some personal experience with some of the less expensive ones. Basic is all I need and hopefully a private bathroom and tv. Thanks again everyone!

Just remember to understand what price you are looking at. NYC adds all sorts of fees and taxes to hotel bills.

Unfortunately your stay includes part of Labor Day weekend, a very expensive time in the city.

The Westside Y mentioned above is a good one. While I haven't stayed there, I know people who have and it is highly regarded.

A room with a double/queen bed at The Big Apple Hostel will run about $118 a night.

The Park 79 is a bit over your budget, but is a good inexpensive option. From their site: "This comfortably appointed Semi-Private accommodation offers 1 double bed as well as a sink and vanity. The 'bathroom' is a private bathroom located only a few feet away and shared with a maximum of 2 other guest rooms. $ 119.00 x 6 Nights + $ 139.00 x 1 Night.

Another spot is Chelsea Lodge, which is about $129 a night, also a bit over your budget, but quite reliable.

I couldn't find any deals on Hotwire. You could try bidding on Priceline, but if it is your first time get help on the board betterbidding.com. If you a post a question they will walk you through the process.

If you want to be near NYU, that's downtown, mom. That YMCA is midtown, just so you know.

Thanks everyone! I'm checking into all your suggestions. I'm still not convinced that we have to stay the whole week- especially due to Labor Day weekend. I'll have to compare the plane prices vs the hotel prices. Jane- is midtown really that far from downtown. Isn't it just a subway ride? Stage Door- I really appreciate your research and time it took! I guess I can live with shared bathrooms if the price is right. It will make me feel like I'm back in college! Anyone know about the Jane Hotel? There was also a walk-up hotel called the Chelsea something. I love going places but I hate the planning of it! New York has so many choices!

The thing about the Jane Hotel is that it sits on the Westside Highway. So if your room is facing the Highway, you will get no sleep on a Friday or Saturday night.

I have a room booked for the end of the month at the Chelsea Star Hotel, right on the corner of 8th Ave. & 30th street. I do have a single room booked, but I have only stayed in the dorm rooms so far. But, I didn't have any issues with the place at all. Actually, they are very helpful with touristy things. They gave me discount coupon things to different attractions and a map of the subway system. You also get a key card to get into the building and your room, if that makes you feel any safer.

The single rooms are $89 a night with a shared bathroom. But, honestly, I have never had issues with waiting in places like that. People are in and out all the time.

Jane- I would love to stay in the neighborhood of NYU but I think it's too expensive. (unless you know of anything) The Chelsea Star is a possibility. Gotham- I don't mind the noise. When my son auditioned at the Univ of Miami- we stayed right on South Beach and it was noisy. I sleep like a log so I really didn't notice! Thanks!

Good attitude supportive mom! (Bring earplugs and you'll be fine.)

If by chance you knock out Labor day weekend.... there may be some MUCH better deals out there. Let me know.

Hmmm, I would think that if you face the highway, the only sound you will hear is that of the highway traffic, whereas if you face the streets, you'll hear the crowds. Lots of laughing and yelling.

Mom, no, I have no ideas, sorry. I never stay in hotels here, but I'm guessing the west village could be expensive.

That's okay Jane- I know what you mean. I don't stay in hotels near me either! Of course the rooms and prices in North Florida are so much bigger and less expensive than New York!
