How do you bold and italicize text in your post?

Everyone italicizes and bolds text all the time and I'm still trying to figure out how to do it. Can someone tell me?

FAQ will tell you.

And don't get in a hissy fit. You know it's true.

(< b > sans spaces < / b > sans spaces)

sans = without.

And recplace i for b for WEEE

Can you guess what underline is?

It is in the FAQ, and I am sure Aigoo explains it better than I, but here goes
type (without the periods)
<.b> I want this bold <./b>
so it should look like this
I want this bold

It is <.i> <./i> for italics

ETA: And of course BSO gets there first, I will say my info is more complete though.

& hearts ; = ♥
& clubs ; = ♣
& spades ; = ♠
