"And it's not like you'll be spending all your time in nasty neighborhoods in the Bronx or something. "
*sigh* the Bronx is not all bad. I've never been shot or mugged or anything. The city is actually alot safer than a lot of other places. You'll be safe :)
I know DC is not the topic of this post, but this is directed to the person who posted that she should tell her parents that "at least she is not going to college in DC". Yeah, DC has crime- mainly in NE/SE, but don't judge the whole city by some neighborhoods. Like all cities, we have good neighborhoods and not-so good ones. Our whole city is not a ghetto. I moved down here in 2001 to go to grad school, ended up staying and have never had a problem.
And I've lived here (DC area) since 1960. Like any large areas, there are a few places I wouldn't go to and many, many more I would. I love DC and spend as much time as possible in the city. I do the same thing in New York. You sound like a reasonably intelligent person - so you should be just fine.

I had the same issue. I'm from a tiny town in the middle of a potato field and now I go to school at Columbia. *waves to emcee* Yes, my mom was frightened, but you just have to let her know that it is where you'll be happy.

I grew up in upstate NY. In the local town where everyone goes to shop, Kingston, a man walked into the mall and started shooting. I emailed all of my relatives and told them they better move to NYC where it's much safer. Use common sense and you will be fine in NYC.
I've lived in NYC for 14 years and not once has anything bad happened to me. People who live outside of NY get the wrong impression from the media all the time.
Have lived here for 7 years now and not had anything bad like that happen.
You'll be fine.
I love the misconceptions that people have on New York.
My father hated the fact that i lived in the Bronx.
I have been here for 10 years and nothing of that nature has ever happened to me (I have even walked through Central Park late at night)
There is more crime elsewhere (suburbia) than in the city. But, no matter where you go, what state you end up in, there will be crime.
I got more ass kickings when I lived in Florida.

I am the most nervous, anxious person on the face of the earth. Personally, walking around in NY alone (even at mid-day) would not thrill me in the least, not that walking anywhere would. I go to college in Florida (S. Florida) and there are things that happen ALL THE TIME! I'm a very 'on my own' kinda person so I don't often go out but at 4am, it's not odd to be woken up with police car sirens...etc. I know someone who has gotten almost all the electronics stolen out of their apartment and drugs...ha; it's like drug city. Chocalate and drugs are meant to mean the same thing here. Where you are you just gotta watch your back. I went to NYC on Sept 11th. My mom was terrified for me to go. And I was too but you can't just stop living because it could be dangerous. I mean, if that were true, you could walk across the street right now and get hit by a car...you better stay in your house all the time!! j/k- (being agoraphobic is not good- trust me.) But anyway- Being that it was Septemeber 11th my mom was more worried about me going to the city than she would be normally. The fact is that there is less likely a chance that a terrorist attack will happen on Semptember 11th (again)than any other given day. No- it's not definite, but what is?
Now, on the other hand, why exactly do we watch the news and most of the time see that something happened in NYC? It's like everyday- this or that happened in NYC but it's rare that they show other places crimes.
As a fourth grader I walked home, alone, across BIG SCARY streets ooooooh.
Sorry, I've always lived in big cities (Hong Kong, NYC), and had the opposite experience and moved to suburbia. You'll be fine. Ot not a big scary place like it's made out to be. Enjoy the city.
I've been mugged once. At 3 AM on the subway.
I'm not joking.
But I go to Marymount as well - you'll love it.
On another note...
It's how you carry yourself. If you look tough, and carry yourself with confidence,no one will mess with you. Who wants to mug from someone that might just attack back??
If you look vulnerable...well, expect the worse.
(You can learn a lot living in the Bronx...)

Thats a good point. everything is about the way you carry yourself. Not only for the safety in NYC. But, slumped with your head down makes you look all sad and depressed and it often gives off vibes of your lack of self-confidence. *Coming from someone who is still trying to figure out how to deal with that*
Unless your director for a show tells you to play that kind of character, there is nothing positive or good about it.
I have lived in NYC for three years and recently was mugged at knifepoint.I carry myself well and am very cautious but the guy came out of no where. I fought back using all the self defense I know, and pepper spray. I don't think he expected a little blonde girl to fight him. He ran and got away with none of my stuff and bruised balls, and I got away with his knife.
The NYPD seemed to tink it was pretty funny, and drove me around in patrol cars that night to look for the guy around town but we never found him. I found out a alot of info from the police that night about local robbery's and most dangerous areas for muggings etc.
Don't be worried about it though- even if you do get mugged it usually only happens once! lol
