ugh. I'm a bunch of years past 21 and can't stand most of the old stuff. I know, I know - heresy! I can take Lerner and Loewe. But when it comes to R&H, I have to turn down even a free ticket. Maybe because these shows are done *all the time* by local theatres or schools and often not well.

Im barely under 21 and I am more of a fan of modern musicals. Basically Rogers and Hammerstein and ALW make me want to rip my eye balls out and eat them!

(Martha Graham from a letter to Agnes de Mille) "There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening That is translated through you into action, And because there is only one of you in all time, This expression is unique. If you block it, It will never exist through any other medium And be lost. The world will never have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, Nor how valuable it is, Nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, To keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware Directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, A blessed unrest that keeps us marching And makes us more alive than others."

I'm 20 years old and I enjoy a musical by Rogers & Hammerstein, except State Fair. But I just love old-time musicals in general...Anything Goes, West Side Story, Guys & Dolls, Oklahoma, Brigadoon, Carousel, Paint Your Wagon, Hello Dolly, Camelot, White Christmas, The Pajama Game, South Pacific, The King and I, I'm a fan of all of them.

Kristin Chenoweth could barely control a Great Dane she trotted onto the stage. "Great, they gave me a dog that weighs five times what I do", she quipped. For the record, she weighs 93 pounds, and has a Maltese.

I love Cole Porter. The others aren't really my taste, except a few Rodgers & Hammerstein things, but I can appreciate their genius.

I do! I'm 14, and love Golden Age musicals. Rodgers and Hammerstein were basically what got me into theatre (I'm sure not a day goes by where my parents don't curse their names).

I do agree with that. Eventhough I do not prefer older musicals, I do still appriciate them. We would not have the musicals today if it wasn't for the genious of past theatre. Also I respect the fact these creators were actually talented enough to write a complete score, unlike the many creators of 5 min prep time juke box musicals! God let us hope this fad dies NOW!

I love Cole Porter, but you forgot some other important Golden Age dudes- George Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern, Kurt Weill, and Irving Berlin. They rock my socks. For the number of famous songs he wrote, Arlen is the most undeservedly obscure (he wrote Wizard of Oz, for God's sake!).

I won't be 21 for another year.

I was raised listening to the Golden Age musicals on my parents' records and The Music Man was my absolute favorite. I was 5 and I knew all the words to "Pick-a-Little, Talk-a-Little", which convinced my parents I would later become an auctioneer.
