even with the more favorable rcp delegate count for huck of 197 there's only 988 more up for grabs which leaves him at 1185 if he wins every single state from here on out. that's 6 delegates short of the simple majority required to win the gop nod.
mccain's got 720 by the same count so he needs 471. tx, oh, pa, in, wi, wa and md give him 476. i don't think huck can stop him.
but by staying in the race even when it's a foregone conclusion, he can keep raising money and try to pressure mccain to tap him as veep.

ah--so it would take a major shift in those states that is not likely to happen.
well, having mccain as the nom is certainly more heartwarming than huckabee in that whoever wins, would be the least of the evils.

It is funny papa,
I have friends that would vote for McCain over Hillary - unless Huck is on the ticket - if you have a McCain/Huck ticket, then they would vote for Hillary.
Huck may energize the base, but he might cost McCain some independents.

Posted: 2/9/08 at 6:09pmwell, my choice for veep would be haley barbour. i don't want huck on the ticket. he's too bigoted for me and if he's on there i won't vote for it either because i don't want him any closer to the whitehouse than outside with a pair of binoculars and a popcorn popper.

That was similar to the sentiment of my friends. They would vote for Hillary just to make sure Huckabee got nowhere near the White House.
Haley Barbour - really? Or are you just papa'ing me.

I dunno, the man did not really impress me as someone on the inside track of the Republicans.
He has at loud whispers of corruption surrounding him, and if I recall, his family profited post-Katrina in taking up lobbying posts to funnel in Katrina aid.
He has also been linked to the NH Phone-Jamming mess.
I cannot see him being an asset in the purple states.

Posted: 2/9/08 at 6:29pmwith mccain at the top of the ticket we don't need an asset in the purple states we need one who can turn out the base and bring those huckster states without resorting to frying squirrel on a popcorn popper.

But, like it or not, the age factor with McCain, and the fact that noone knows what 5 1/2 years in captivity as a POW has done to his long-term physical stamina, makes his running mate a factor.
I would bet that many of those turned off by Huck would also be turned off by Barbour as well.
I dunno, it will be an interesting year.

no, barbour's a lot smarter than huck ever will be about what to say and who to say it to. huck has started reading his own press clippings a li'l bit. plus a lot of people remember him favorably from his role at the top of the rnc. he caught a lot of reflected glory from '94 and people don't forget that.
i also disagree with the premise that a running mate can sink a candidate - even one who might need a walker to finish his second term. ferraro didn't sink mondale, he had no shot, and huck or haley won't sink mccain. the socons they bring in will outweigh the independents they drive away.
as far as mccain's age? the largest % of voters is always old and they know better than anyone that people are living longer. he'd be 80 at the end of his 2nd term. 80's the new 60. ask my 92 year-old father who is making it up and down three flights of stairs daily two and a half months after hip replacement surgery. i guarantee his response would be, "80? he's a blanking kid! give him a blanking lollipop!"

Posted: 2/9/08 at 7:34pmheck we coulda run bobo the chimp as veep in '88 and won. the fact that we didn't did contribute to the loss in '92. i know, i said a candidate's choice for veep can't lose them the race, but a veep's actions in office can help lose the re-election.

I'm also not convinced the VP will have that much effect on the election.
I can't imagine Barbour though. I would think no matter what, McCain will go with someone young, just to hope people talk less about his age.
#43huckster wins kansas
Posted: 2/9/08 at 8:34pmi think going with someone young would do nothing but guarantee that his age remains a topic.

I meant something more akin to
"My age is not a factor, but even if it were, look this guy is hand picked to run the party for years."
#45huckster wins kansas
Posted: 2/9/08 at 8:51pmi know, i just think that if he goes with someone "young" his age will get mentioned subtly in every single photo - and not so subtly by every single reporter. it will become a bigger issue because he felt the need to address it in an obvious way. it also suggests that he himself is worried he might no make it. sends all he wrong signs for me.
