I don't know if any of you know, but I was doing a little show a while back? Perhaps I didn't mention it. It was called BETTY'S SUMMER VACATION.

Anywho, It's because of that that I didn't get a chance to really see Mr. Hung's work.

But I in a clip I kinda thought he was...well...how shall I say? Developmentally slow (NO OFFENSE MEANT...I REALLY DID!!!).

"In the next logical step for a pop vocalist with questionable vocals, "American Idol" reject and UC Berkeley civil engineering major William "She Bangs" Hung has banged out a record deal.

Hung's accidental superstardom took its latest incredible turn Monday when KOCH Records and Fuse Music Network, both of New York, announced they had signed the Hong Kong native to a multi-album deal. Because fame is fleeting, Hung spent the weekend recording a 10-song album tentatively called "The True Idol." It is scheduled for release on April 6.

"It's fun, it's exciting, and I want to see how the album turns out," Hung, 21, said Monday, adding that there was a lesson in his success: "Never give up on your dreams. Keep going. Keep trying."

It might seem strange that a record company is banking on an engineering student who became famous for singing off-key, who has turned to "Singing for Dummies" for help and who wears mostly blue-and-gold Cal sweatshirts. But if the after-school crowd gathered outside Sequoia Middle School in Pleasant Hill on Monday afternoon is any indication, the album just might be a hit.

"He's pimpin'," said 12-year-old Pierce Ryan, who added that he would buy the album. "His voice is, like, really good, but his dancing, like, really sucks."

Ryan's friends Obi Barrantes and Andrew Fernandes, both 13, shook their hips and swung their arms in a herky-jerky impression of the moves Hung broke out when he sang "She Bangs" during his Jan. 27 appearance on "American Idol."

"She bangs!" they shouted. They, too, said they would buy the album.

"His voice is pretty tight," Barrantes explained.

An earnest Hung belted out "She Bangs" in his Chinese accent during "American Idol" auditions taped in San Francisco in September. Simon Cowell, the show's bad-cop judge, thought Hung's performance was so bad that he interrupted him to say, "You can't sing, you can't dance."

"I already gave my best, and I have no regrets at all," Hung responded. He later added with a smile, "You know, I have no professional training of singing."

America laughed at Hung's performance but also loved his grace, and a cult celebrity was born. Fan sites sprung up across the World Wide Web and drew millions of visitors. DJs cranked out remixes. Hung went on the talk-show circuit.

"Saturday Night Live" did a parody. Ellen DeGeneres sang a duet with Hung. Even "American Idol" got in on the act, inviting Hung back to anchor a special called "Uncut, Uncensored and Untalented" that aired March 1.

Hung is scheduled to perform "She Bangs" on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on April 8.

Last week, Hung ranked 40th among the topics most searched for on Lycos - - a precarious position between the Bible and Howard Stern.

The record deal might allow Hung to move out of his room in a residential hotel on University Avenue in Berkeley. He gets $25,000 up front and an undisclosed cut of any profits from the deal, which begins with 100,000 copies of his first album, said Alan Grunblatt, KOCH's general manager.

Although several "American Idol" contestants have landed recording contracts, Hung is the first cast-off to cash in.

"He's got a vibe, you know?" said Grunblatt, who compared Hung to Tiny Tim. "He's very vulnerable, extremely cute, and he's a real underdog."

Songs on Hung's forthcoming combination CD and DVD include covers of Elton John's "Rocket Man" and the Village People's "YMCA" along with a rendition of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from "The Lion King,'' and, of course, "She Bangs" -- which used to belong to Ricky Martin.

And while Hung auditioned for "American Idol" on a whim, he said that being a performer is fun and that he's learning how to be a star.

Kids at Sequoia Middle School consider him a star, but 11-year-old Patricia Quinto doesn't see what all the fuss is about. After her friends had left Monday, she scrunched up her nose and whispered, "Why do people like William Hung?"
