. . .and would like to know which song I could sing. My specialty is any song I can act out or show off my voice with, such as "On My Own". Normally, I can go up to a D, but sometimes I can sing higher like in "Defying Gravity". However, I've sung "On My Own" in front of an audience before, and I feel it will be weird singing a song from "Wicked" out of context of the show. I was possibly thinking of singing "I Cain't Say No", which fits my range perfectly, so I'm told, but I'm worried about how an audience full of teens who have mostly not been exposed to much of Rogers and Hammerstein's work would react to my choice. Do any of you have any other suggestions? You don't have to rush, after all, the concert IS in May.

"gimme, gimme" from thoroughly modern millie sounds like it would fit your voice well -- check that out.
are you definitely not doing a ballad? i know "on my own" is, but you seem to be shying away from them with "cain't say no". i might have more suggestions if you'd consider ballads, too.

I might consider ballads.

if you have an AWESOME pianist, you could look at "summer in ohio" from TL5Y, but it's a hard song.
what kind of concert is this?

It's a chorus concert, but it's kinda cool because everyone in the chorus gets to audition in order to get privilages to sing a solo in the concert, and I need a song that I can sing well so my teacher will let me preform that song in the concert.

Update: Recently, sister bought the cast recording of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" and I fell in love with the song "Oklahoma?". . . .but I know that that song would be inappropiate for a school concert. Does anyone have any song suggestions along those lines that I can actually sing?

if you're into DRS, you could do "here i am" -- but it's relatively hard with the high note at the end. i've heard it butchered.
that said, you may be able to pull it off amazingly!

It depends. What's the high note?

it sounds to me like an Eb, but I don't have perfect pitch. if it is an Eb, that's a half step above your D, but you said you can sing higher sometimes? what kind of quality is your D? i'm assuming it's not legit if that's your highest note. is it full-belt or belt-mix?
if its belt-mix going up another half step without straining shouldn't be a problem, you'll just have to work at it a little bit.
A song you might consider is "My Strongest Suit" from Aida.
Also if you wanna go old school, something like "Bushel and a Peck" or "Take back your mink" from Guys and Dolls could be super fun. (they're very character driven)
Now I'm on a roll with Frank Loesser haha, I also think a nice easier tune could be "Happy to Keep his Dinner Warm" from How to Succeed...etc.
"Not for the Life of me" from thoroughly modern millie could be good.
and on a whim... "Somewhere that's green" from Little Shop of Horrors.
Sorry I was on a roll...

Oo. . .my voice is too low for "Somewhere That's Green", unfortunately. And I'm not familiar with the rest of the songs you mentioned except for "A Bushel and a Peck," and as for the DRS piece, I can't find DRS sheet music ANYWHERE. It's crazy.
So, out of despair, I considered my options, and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
In no particular order:
"Defying Gravity" (Wicked): Pros- My chorus teacher has the sheet music. When I hit that high note, I REALLY hit that high note, and with a bit of practice, it could be a real tour of force.
Cons- When I miss that high note. . . .And in addition, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the other kids auditioned with this song. Also, it would be a bit weird singing about "Oz" in front of a live audience.
"Gimme Gimme" or "Not For the Life of Me" (Throughly Modern Millie) Pros- I can listen to Sutton Foster sing it on YouTube and learn the melody and lyrics there. Supposedly a great song for my voice.
Cons- This song is new to me. And where would I get sheet music?
"I Cain't Say No" (Oklahoma!) Pros- My music tutor says that this is a *really* good song for me. I have the chance to act it out and every thing. Plus, I sing that song about a thousand times better than the person on the OBCR. (Did she sing badly on purpose?)
Cons: Every single time I've seen this song performed, it's performed badly. Even in the "Oklahoma!" movie it's performed badly. Am *I* supposed to sing it badly? Also, I'm not sure how people will react to such an old fashioned song unless I fiddle with the arrangement a bit.
"On My Own" (Les Miserables) Pros- I've sung this song before, and I'm known to sing this song really, really well on a good day. It has the potential to be a real tour de force for me. Also, barely anyone in my school has heard of "Les Miserables", so I can audition it without any competition.
Cons- I actually wanted to do something new, and I've been known to sing this song really, really poorly on a bad day.
"Here I Am" (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) Pros- I can learn it from my newly obtained DRS cd.
Cons- That high note. . . .and where will I get the lyrics?
So far, those are the songs I'm leaning towards. Mum wants me to sing "On My Own", but I know that sister is sick of that song. Also, if I'm unable to take my friend to see her production of "Les Miserables", I'd like her to see one of the songs from that show performed. What do you think?

maybe this is a stupid question, but how is your voice too low for somewhere that's green if you can sing defying gravity? having just finished playing audrey at my HS musical and always singing DG in my kitchen haha, i know that the two are nothing alike range-wise. sorry i'm just confused..

Because in the sheet music my music teacher has, "Somewhere That's Green" goes much higher than "Defying Gravity".
