They mean something to me. My partner and I say it frequently throughtout each day - and mean it. I end each conversation with my family - and my friends who I consider family - with 'I love you' - and we mean it then, too. The words are only an extension of how much you accept the power of that emotion in your life.

everytime I talk with relatives we end the call with 'I love you"......my partner and I may not say it daily, but at least every few days.....
I think where most people lack is letting their friends know.....our friends really become our family as we grow-up......and in the beginning of the AIDS crises I learned all too suddenly to make sure the people in my life know how I feel.....

As DGrant said... except the family part. I have my brother, but that's another Oprah Show.

It is, all about you. OK. Go.

liotte, I'm kind of with you on this. I'm 20 years old and for the first time since I was maybe 5, I'm beginning to feel comfortable telling my parents that I love them. I've just had a rocky past with them (not Oprah-worthy, but rocky) and we're still just beginning to work through that enough to the point where I can actually convey these feelings towards them.
I've never said it to a significant other because I've never been in a relationship that I did honestly feel that I loved them. I'm not going to say it if I don't mean it.

this may sound weird, but ive always wanted to tell my mom that I loved her, Ive always said to myself, its not the right time, it just doesnt feel right. The last time I told her that I loved her was the night that I came out.

To those who matter most to me, I tell them I love them frequently. I'm half-afraid they'll forget.

Skittles, the Oprah reference was because most of my family is gone. I would never use that phrase to down play anyone elses situation (just to clarify) :) I can however confirm that I have friends who are my family now.

vbplayer, sorry, I didn't mean it as a response, I started typing that out before I even read your first post. I just used that as an example myself, meaning I know my situation is nowhere near as bad as many other people's.

skittles, no problem, I thought I was the one who may have offended by that comment. Just wanted to make sure it was interpreted the way I meant it.
liotte, very thought provoking post. It made me stop and think.
Thanks

I don't use 'love' lightly. I say it to my family when we talk, and my very few very good friends, whom I truly love. In spanish we have other words that we use when expressing deep affection that is not love, and maybe that's why I'm sort'a stingy with the use of 'love' in English.
But to those I love, I do tell them I love them. Frequently.

Growing up those 3 little words were hardly said amongst my family members...we just knew, but once I moved out of the house my Mom and me would end our phone conversations with I Love You....those were the last 3 words she said to me in a phone conversation before she had a major stroke and went into a coma and a week later passed away.
I now say it to everyone who is important to me and that I truly love....and I don't care if they don't say it back. I tell my sons ALL the time.

Yes, I say them daily, and I mean it.
To my partner, to my family, to friends who are dear to me.
One can never say, or hear, those words too frequently.
Four most powerful words, in my opinion, are:
No. Yes. Courage. Love.

That does it. I'm now opening iTunes and listening to "I Love You" - Babs 'Classical'.

I make sure to let everyone who I love know that verbally and often and much more so because of stories such as Boobs and his mom.
Oddly (and this was odd) as I began teaching my class at Temple University last evening a city councilman climbed to the obervation deck of City Hall and was presumed to be a jumper (article attached). My classroom looks directly out to City Hall and I was facing him while trying to teach. The thought that crossed my mind as it all transpired was that I hoped that his loved ones knew that he loved them. Thankfully, it ended without incident.

SOMMS - perhaps the problem was that he didn't know how much - or if - they loved him.

It's been very interesting and both happy and sad to read everyone's responses. I think it's wonderful that so many people say I Love You to their loved ones. I just wish I could do the same- while I want to say I Love You to my family, such as to my mother or sisters when I am ending a phone call with them, it just sounds so awkward. I would like to be able to say it, but after years and years of that phrase not being present much (though we all know we love each other), it just won't come out without sounding insincere. Don't know what we can do to change that, but we're working on it!

The only way it can become familiar and easy, liotte, is like with every other thing in life - practice. So it's awkward at first - big deal. Soon it will be as natural as saying "hello."
