This was one of the segments of the Drive-In Movie homage "Chillerama".
I found it amusing. It's a take off on the old beach musicals. A new kid in town finds himself having strange feelings for other boys. When they get to be too much he turns into a werebear. Which is exactly what you think it is - a half werewolf half large hirsute man.
And of course there's the bad kid (i.e. motorcycle gang/James Dean stereotype) who is also a werebear.
Honestly I wouldn't really recommend checking out the movie unless you're particularly curious, but this may make for a fun night of musical theater.
From director Tim Sullivan:
And I know there's a lot of people out there who are not gonna be happy about this news, but for those who don't like WEREBEARS, you can skip the next paragraph, and for those who love WEREBEARS, it's time to rejoice, because, despite the fact that it's something that a lot of people don't like or a lot of people love, I WAS A TEENAGE WEREBEAR is going to be expanded into a full-length stage musical that will premiere for at least two months in LA next September, following in the tradition of RE-ANIMATOR: THE MUSICAL, TOXIC AVENGER: THE MUSICAL and all that kind of stuff … Adam Rifkin is producing it with me, Sean Abley, who actually writes for Fangoria and is also a director of stage musicals, [will be] be directing it … I'm producing it, writing it, and I'll be writing about six to eight new songs for it, I've already written two, and I'm excited to say that Anton Troy and Sean Lockhart will actually be reprising their roles.
On a side note, I had never heard of Sean Lockhart before seeing this movie last month, but I have discovered that he has a far more interesting past (underage porn star, possible co-conspirator in a murder) than anything in Chillerama.

lol. Brent Corrigan in a stage musical?!? I'm not sure if I'm turned on or horrified. His singing in the movie was barely passable and that was probably with the aid of various studio pitch correction techniques.
Lol, that's so true CATS. All the singing was awful, and the music wasn't that good either. But it was certainly an interesting idea.
I think it was the best of the segment of the movie though. Well maybe tied with the one where Hitler creates a Hasidic Frankenstein.
I watched this again on netflix and I do think it could be kind of fun as a small fringe type musical like Reefer Madness or Toxic Avenger. Listening to the soundtrack is a bit painful though so I would hope that they have the sense to hire someone who can cook up some more exciting arrangements for the songs and find a cast who can actually sing them. "Sean Lockhart" is pretty to look at and he can be a decent actor with the right director on his side, In the Closet is his best effort so far, but the boy just cannot sing.
