I Will Never Understand Gay Republicans!

A co worker of mine and I got talking the other day about the election. He is a nice guy. He knows I am openly bisexual and that I feel very comfortable with the gay community and often call other gay people my brothers and sisters. Few months ago he told me he was gay and that only a few people know about it (no family or co workers know) So, having said that I was surprised when he told me the other day that he is a proud Republican and how he despises the Democrats. I went off on how the GOP hates gay people and asked how he could be a proud member of a party who does not have his interest at heart. This seemed to really send over the edge. He asked where I got the idea that the GOP did not like gays. He claimed that was liberal propaganda and not true. He then brought up the Log Cabin Republicans,a group he is very interested in and supports. It seemed like every word out of his mouth surprised me.

I brought up Larry Craig. He said that Senator Craig is NOT gay and the story was mostly the liberal media fishing for a story.

I brought up gay marriage and he said the GOP is right. We should not be allowed to marry.

I brought up several other examples, but he was just ranting at this point. He was very angry and defensive and even said he wished Huckabee was the front runner and not McCaine. I brought up what Huckabee wanted to do with AIDS victims back in the early 90's and he said it was taken out of context.

I discovered I was not getting anywhere with him and that he is nothing more than a self loathing gay man. Since then he has been very cold towards me and has mentioned several times he is afraid I'm gonna 'out him' because I'm a liberal and thats what I like to do with those who disagree with us. I told him I would never do that and lets not politics anymore. He's very bitter and I can tell things are not the same anymore.

I will never understand Gay Republicans.NEVER!

Sounds she's reading the Drudge Report WAY too much.

But really, he's probably more of a product of his environment and upbringing than anything else--alot of us gays start that way. We believe what the parents, teachers and clergymen tell us, then in the real world, we slowly begin to form our own opinions.

If he's just come out, he hasn't experienced alot as a GAY MAN--give him some time and a copy of The Advocate and let Life run its course.

He's alot older than me. He's 44 years old and very religious. Why do so many gay men feel you can't be gay and religious?

re: I Will Never Understand Gay Republicans!

Because so many religious figures condemn gay people.

he comes from a different time, romantico.

And yes, East Village, we are allowed to vote as we please--it just frustrates some of us when other 'mos vote the party who REALLY profits from scapegoating us. Which is not to say that the Dems are a whole lot better...but you don't see the Dem. party nominees recanting a speech in which they've advocated exiling all the AIDS patients or demonizing an opponenet because his state legalized gay marriage.

Sounds like your coworker is a self-loathing ignorant self-deluded moron. And if he did indeed say what you're telling us, tell him he's a hypocrite as well:

He asked where I got the idea that the GOP did not like gays.

I brought up gay marriage and he said the GOP is right. We should not be allowed to marry.

Practically gay-friendly! Perhaps you should ask him why he "chose" his lifestyle.

He's made it clear he is no longer comfortable knowing me. I thought our debate was pretty civil. I was just surprised he got so upset and defensive. I have discovered being around people like this are not good for me. I still like him as a co worker but I don't think I'd have anything to do with him outside of work. I really hate discussing politics with people unless I know where they stand and agree with them. Things get way too heated and I'll be the first to admit I am guilty of this as well.

re: I Will Never Understand Gay Republicans!

i may be a democrat, and straight, but as much as i dont care for almost all republican points of view, one thing i hate about my own party is the way they talk about republicans like they're evil or dumb or hateful, etc.

its a different point of view. which i (and you) may not agree with, but its a different point of view!

we need to figure out how to all get along together and work together... thats what i think anyhow.

re: I Will Never Understand Gay Republicans!

its an EVIL, DUMB and HATEFUL different point of view cuban.

How do expect us (homosexuals) to get along with a group of people determined to exterminate us.

ETA basically cuban what it comes down to, is if the republicans weren't evil dumb and hateful, we wouldn't have reason to say they were.

re: I Will Never Understand Gay Republicans!

liver, i agree that it comes off that way, and that alot of republicans hate the gay community and do evil hateful things... but i dont think that means all republicans are hateful or evil... and that we cant look at it as a "different opinion"... thats what it is... it seems wrong... really wrong... but its a difference of opinion.

but isnt a democrat calling them hateful and evil the same kind of prejudice?

i'm just saying... take my mom for example. serious republican. she doesnt support gay marriage (which i do), and we disagree on it, but she has gay friends and is nto hateful towards gay people, she just doesnt agree with gay marriage...

its hard for me to grasp it... it makes me angry at times because i think everyone should be equal, but i also need to try and understand that not everyone will think like me (even tho my point of view seems painfully obvious as "the right way")... so thats how i look at it. a different opinion which i need to respect, especially if i expect them to respect me.

anyhow... just my .02...

re: I Will Never Understand Gay Republicans!

Yes, its a different point of view but a hateful one. There are people who hate muslims, jews, hispanics, and a number of many other groups. Its their right, but in my opinion it is still wrong to discriminate. The GOP does not believe gay people are equal to straight people. Have any Republican politicians done anything to help gays? What has the Log Cabin Republicans done to actually help gay people? Republicans even seem to take pride in the fact that they hate gay people.

Its hard to get along with someone who thinks your lifestyle is a choice and that you have no rights. I take pride in the fact that my party reaches out to all people and not just heterosexual rich white americans.

re: I Will Never Understand Gay Republicans!

I'm sorry but being against gay marriage means you are FUNDAMENTALLY against full and equal rights for homosexuals. You wish us to be second class citizens. There are things that come with marriage beyond the title. There are protections and rights, benefits not afforded to homosexuals now because we can not marry, very important benefits that could mean the difference between life and death in some situations. Anyone opposed to gay marriage is opposed to homosexuals and i can't be Ok with ANYONE like that. Republicans are evil, and democratic politicians are cowards. thats the truth. I'm 23, and i'm honestly beginning to believe that i won't be full citizen of this country before my death. Hatred and Cowardice rule this country. our WONDERFUL american system is a crock of ****.

re: I Will Never Understand Gay Republicans!

romantico... i dont think hateful is a fair thing to say about all republicans... like i said above, my own mom has gay friends, does not treat any gay people with disrespect, but she personally disagrees with gay marriage and thinks marriage should be kept between a man and a woman... i dont like it, you dont like it, but its her point of view...

and what are we going to do? only be friends or associate ourselves with those who think exactly like us? should i stop speaking to my mother now because she doesnt agree with me? course not... i grit my teeth and move on... haha... knowing that deep down i am right and she is wrong...

re: I Will Never Understand Gay Republicans!

I don't think Republicans are like that at all--but they too often appeal to the lesser instincts in people: fear, prejudice and intolerance--whether it's gay marriage or the Obama-Osama nonsense or Hillary/Ann is a lesbian...maybe it's just my jaded perspective and certainly the Dems do their share of mud-slinging, but they're not the same. Which is probably why we lose so much. We--like I'm running!

re: I Will Never Understand Gay Republicans!

Have you asked her WHY she thinks that cuban? The answer usually boils down to a matter of religion, which is fine, but it shouldn't affect public policy that discriminates against complete strangers.

If gay marriage were legalized, how would it change HER life?

re: I Will Never Understand Gay Republicans!

well liverpool, while i agree with much of what you have to say, i guess i'm just a silly fool who tries to be optimistic that change happens slowly... but it happens... and so i look forward to the day when you too can get married the way i did! even if my momma may not like it...

lildogs... i think we see things the same way. i definitely agree that a much larger portion of republicans (atleast the ones i know) operate on fear, prejudice, intolerance, all those things you mentioned... thats definitely true.

i just dont like generalizing...

re: I Will Never Understand Gay Republicans!

There's nothing wrong with generalizing when most of the people you're talking about make the generalization true. you show me a republican that thinks gays should be alowed to marry and I'll show you 10,000 who think we shouldn't be be allowed near their children (or their pets for that matter, cause you know, slippery slope)

re: I Will Never Understand Gay Republicans!

lildogs... i've exhausted myself having that conversation with her... of course its based on religion. isnt it always? my point of view is your point of view... it should never affect public policy... her point of view is, she gets to voice her opinion as a citizen by voting... and the way she looks at it is, she makes most of her decisions based on personal faith / morals... i may not like it... or morally i might see things differently than she does... but this is america... i have to grit my teeth and let her have her opinions the same way she lets me have mine... cest la vie right? did i spell that right? haha

re: I Will Never Understand Gay Republicans!

I agree with Liverpool. I have yet to hear how 2 men being married are a threat to a heterosexual marriage. If they are so concerned with marriage, why haven't any of these conservatives outlawed divorce?

Cubanpab, I do see where your coming from. I'm not saying all Republicans feel this way. I am talking about gay republicans. I don't think hate or discrimination works in any society. My Mom and Dad use to be Republicans. Since 2000 my Mom and Dad have become Independents. They both voted Democrat in 2004 and plan on voting Democrat in this election. They are fed up with the hate, corruption, and abuse of power and feel its the Republican party who has become drunk with power and way to radical. Many of their friends and moderate Republicans have left the party because of this.

I'd love to live in your world for just a day. Sadly, its not like that.

re: I Will Never Understand Gay Republicans!

There are alot of good reasons to be a republican: financial responsibility, self-reliance, low taxes--all good ideas.

I even think that if Congress wants to make gun laws, it must amend the Constitution. The 2nd Amendment is quite clear--to me at least.

But being a Republican has changed alot during MY lifetime--it now has more to do with social issues that (as I've said before) incite people to vote against their own financial interests.

And in a way, it's encouraging to think that people feel more strongly about a social issue than money--unfortunately, the social issue is usually against an already disenfranchised group (single, pregnant women) or it has no bearing on their everyday lives (gay marriage).

Cubanpab, I highly recommend this dvd. You can rent it at Blockbuster or Netflix. You should watch it with your mom. Check out the trailer.

re: I Will Never Understand Gay Republicans!

There are plenty of people who are Republican and socially liberal. They agree with the economic views or foreign policy views.

I imagine there are few Dems who agree 100% with their party's platform and same for GOPs.

Having said that--anyone who does not support gay marriage is not a friend of mine. We can be acquaintances or relatives. But not friends.

My friends believe that I am equal to them.
