spidey - do you have experience waiting tables or bartending? At least that way, you get the tips and can make some pretty decent money (maybe moreso than retail or McD's).
I loved working in restaurants, but hated the hours, so now I'm a corporate type that works mostly days. But waiting tables put me through college, and when I was laid off, man, those bartending and table-waiting skills came in VERY handy. Also, a lot of the work is in the evening, which leaves your days free (more or less) for interviews, sending out resumes, etc.
Also, try catering companies. This time of year with a lot of events going on, catering companies are often looking for temps to help with serving, tending bar, cooking, pretty much everything.
