Posted: 7/5/07 at 12:59pmI just got something in the mail, saying that my unemployment benefits will be terminated in two weeks. After I read that, I went to the unemployment office and they said that they do not renew unemployment benefits. I was just there two weeks ago for my monthly review, and they couldn't tell me that then?!?!? So, I have two weeks to find a job or it's over. And it's not like I am not trying. Just in the past two weeks alone, I have sent in 6 resumes. Guys, I am so scared right now, that I feel like crying and I am literally shaking.

Deep breaths, DJ!
It sounds like it's time to get ANY kind of money coming in, and then continue your search then for what you want.
Deep breaths again!

I'm sorry. I sympathize, because I'm in the same boat - I'm also unemployed at the moment, and am trying like mad to find a job.
Know that I'm sending you a giant *hug* and a prayer that we BOTH find jobs soon!

Hang in there spidey!
Have you maxed out your yearly unemployment benefit? Sometimes, the initial period will run out, but you can get your benefits extended - in my state I think you can collect a maximum of 26 weeks per year (even though the initial period might be, say, 13 weeks).
If not, see if you can find some temp work in the short term. When I was between jobs in 2001 (the job market was terrible then - people were getting laid off left and right), and my unemployement ran out, I started bartending again part time, just to have some work and income while I looked for another job. It was tight, but I managed to get the bills paid.
With six resumes out there, something is likely to pan out for your sooner rather than later.
Good luck! Deep breaths - stay positive!

AND: I second DG and Papa: take anything - Starbucks, McDonald's, whatever - for the time being. And step up the resume sending.

Posted: 7/5/07 at 1:13pmregister with monster.com, careerbuilder.com, hotjobs.com and resign yourself to spending several hours (yes hours) a day scouring the sites and submitting resumes and writing cover letters. i usually spend from 6:30a-9a sitting here doing exactly that and i'm in a job rich environment.

Temp agencies have saved my butt. I mean, they are somewhat crappy jobs most of the time, but at least you'll be earning some money while you search for your ideal position.
I found my current job from Craigslist of all places, and it's the best damn job I've ever had.

Are you in NYC? I know some temps agencies. Unemployment is really great (despite the lack of medical coverage) if you use it the right way. I did temp and free-lance projects for most of my unemployment last year, it extended my benefits quite a bit.
Unemployment is not in place for people to sit on their asses. You should be spending 40 hours a week trying to find employment.

Posted: 7/5/07 at 1:33pmI found a job in five days on monster.com, with two more offers coming right on the heels of accepting the first. But you have to be diligent and treat looking for a job like a full-time job. Six resumes in two weeks, no matter how arcane of nichey your field, will not cut it.

Spidey - I agree with a lot of the points stated so far. I am in the unemployed category as well, and I know very well that if I don't find something towards the end, I will take anything available. Just bring in cash and keep searching. It sucks, but can't be avoided.
I know I am in a more job rich area like papa, but for general admin work, there are 50+ jobs posted a day on monster.com looking for beginning to no experience needed other than being somewhat literate and friendly. I have found my past two jobs on Monster.
Just stay calm, you will figure it out. **hugs**

I am currently enrolled at 3 Temp Agencies but there are just no administrative jobs available. In my area, it is mostly retail and manufacturing. I have even sent resumes off in another town that I will have to drive over a hour to get to, and still nothing. I even applied for a job at altell and some other place that I can't think of the name right now, and NOTHING. I don't know what to do. I just got applications today for fast food joints and am going to turn them in either today or tomorrow.
Okay, I just looked at careerbuilder.com for the next town over and I only found 7 jobs to apply to. I am going to look at hotjobs.com and monster.com to see what options I have left.

Papa is dead on- As someone who has done A LOT of jubhunting-- you have to look at FINDING a job as your FULL-TIME job. 7 Resumes in two weeks? Man, I was sending out seven a day. I was laid off imemdiately before 9-11- I sent out 500 resumes- Letters, email, electronic sumbissions- before I found a job.
And get your resume on every single job site! Post it, link it and update it EVERY week-- cause most places don't even look at the "old" resumes. Every time you update you move to the top of the week.

Posted: 7/5/07 at 1:47pmYou need to check in with those temp agencies every single day by phone. Every single day they meet new candidates and you fall that much farther off their radar. You can't just sign up and wait for them to call you.

Posted: 7/5/07 at 1:50pmI know Rath, and I do call them. One temp agency I went to said that 95% of the people enrolled with them are looking for an administrative type job and they only get an opening once every few months. I am trying, trust me!

DJ is in a very limited population center, so most jobs are taken by people already.
DJ - if there are retail positions, try to jump on those - and submitting for fast food is a good idea. Remember, it's NOT what you'll end up doing in the long run.

I know, DG. I am going later today to go pick up some more applications from various places. Thanks for the advice everyone. I really do appreciate it.

Retail? Shoulda said so! Here you go. Happy hunting.
And for retail, you need to walk. Walk the mall with a stack of resumes. Leave them at every store that has a "Help Wanted" sign AND at every store your egularaly shop at or have any expertise. Ask for the manager, introduce yourself and put a resume in their hand. They may be thinking of hiring and you might get the job before the sign goes up.

You've gotten some very good advice here Spider. Finding a job should have become your new job the day after you were let go. Have you used the services of a job coach? I suspect that your resume is not properly marketing you to your best advantage. Show it to everyone you know for their input. Flood the aforementioned sites with it. Tell everyone you know that you are looking for employment -- in today's market, jobs are filled through networking. "Paper or plastic?", "Would you like fries with that?" should have been your mantra weeks ago.
Stay off this board from 9 to 6. Stay off the TV during those same hours. Release the drama, focus on the goal and good luck.

Posted: 7/5/07 at 2:08pmThe reason I did not look for retail or fast food jobs before, was because I was making more money in my unemployment check than I would have made at those places. But, since the circumstances of changed, I am looking into that now.
