My friend came over, and I invited her to see the Wicked tour when it rolls around. She listened to three songs:

"Popular"
"No One Mourns the Wicked"
"Defying Gravity"

Within one minute of Defying Gravity, she said, "Turn that off. It's boring." I reluctantly did. Same thing happened with Assassins:

"Everybody's Got the Right"
"Ballad of Czologoz"

And then Les Mis...

"Little People"
"Look Down"
"One Day More"

I don't understand kids in my town. They don't know a thing about theatre, and they think it's boring sh*t. What a world...she even hated Wicked. I am so glad I don't follow the crowd and listen to rap music and watch MTV all day long. What life that would be. Boring, lifeless. Why do kids do this? WHY?!?

Maybe WICKED just doesn't appeal to them.

Or maybe they are uncultured little brats.

I went though the same things. Some kids don't think it's cool unless everyone else thinks it's cool. And sadly, the general amount of kids nowadays don't think theatre or art is cool. I just hate when they try to make you feel like you're the loser for listening to showtunes, when infact, they are the real losers, for not having enough taste to know what is good.

You know, I think most of them are uncultured brats...

I'm serious. Most of them try to act cool, but they don't. I think the coolest kids are the ones who aren't cool in the so-called "cool" kids eyes.

Too many cools?

If you do things solely because they're cool, there's a good chance you're a dweeb. Yes, there are times when it's depressing to feel apart from your peers, but at least you're choosing what you do based on something other than a demented hive mind that's half-dictated by advertisers anyway.

what's not to understand?
If I started talking to you about U Oregon football you'd probably say it was boring....if I then switched to Kentucky Basketball, or German soccer.....my guess is you'd say the same thing.
Different strokes......not everyone likes the same things......
frankly it's pretty east to understand that

You know what? People who think they're cool are really the ones who aren't.

BUT...

I have converted some of my friends into at least appreciating Broadway (yay!!!!!). They all used to hassle me heaps about it, but now, one of my friends is in love with Avenue Q(not surprising really, as he's a teenage boy) and one of my other friends likes listening to Wicked when she comes over.

So even though some people still don't get why we love musical theatre, don't worry, even people you think are totally against it may still enjoy some parts of it, and if not, don't worry, it's their loss.

Well, keep in mind that just because theatre is your thing, other people have their things as well, and though everyone in a perfect world would be open-minded to everyone elses things, it's sadly not the case.

Too many things, I know.

That said, I gave up trying to convert my friends to musicals. I just couldn't take it anymore. Then a friend got dragged (literally) with me to see Rent on my 16th birthday...7 long years ago...and she ended up bawling and loved it.

I guess the saccharine moral here is - miracles happen?

I live in Kentucky...I grew up in a small redneck town, at least now I live in a bigger city. I fell in love with RENT and when I would wear my shirt from the show people would get confused and ask questions like "is that shirt supposed to be a joking advertisment for your being a hooker?" "Why does your shirt say RENT? I thought you're parents owned your house!" Talk about idiots. When I would try to explain it they would turn my Cast recording off and start blasting country..I quickly turned that off...no redneck stuff on my stereo thank you very much. I was always the theater geek..but I loved it. Screw the cool kids.

I agree with all of you! I'm 14 and almost everyone I know listens to Rap and all that other types of 'music'. Honestly, if ya can't sing well to it (or understand the words for that matter) it isn't really fun to listen to. Anyway, I've burned a few of my friends some cast recordings and they ended up liking it- hey, it's a start. KelRel- I had the same Rent shirt incidents happen to me, lol. Also, my friend is seeing a show soon, she doesn't know which one yet, and she doesn't want to go. I told her I'd go for her. She knew I wasn't kidding either... =P

A most ingenious paradox.

gavrochegirl, since I don't know your friend, this is just a wild guess, but is it possible that she had decided beforehand that she wasn't going to like the music? Maybe she listened to enough to be able to say, okay, I've tried it ... but sometimes, if a person's attitude is already set toward a particular disposition, it can be hard for them to change their own mind, let alone someone else getting them to see the world in a new way.

If this is even possibly the case, give her time. You've planted the seed ... sometimes that's all you can do. She may come around yet. Hang in there!

Mm, same where I live. I don't know if I really *converted* anyone, but I sort of... helped some people along. At least your friend STARTED to give your CDs a chance, wheras the majority of mine respond with "hahaha, no f***ing way," despite the fact that I listen to their music constantly, and without complaint.

I know how it feels, but generally either they'll like it, or they won't. It's frusturating when they don't even try, but some people are small-minded, like that (like JbaraFan said). It's annoying now, but in a few years they'll grow up (hopefully).

I know what you mean, it is sad to think that people do not appreciate the theater and that they think its boring but believe me, I saw my first broadway show in second grade and have been hooked ever since, it is an acquired taste and for those of us lucky enough to have it we can share something special but those who dont well its too bad for them. My senior class saw WICKED and many of the kids hated it, I couldnt imagine what it would have been like seeing RENT, or Les Mis or even POTO but it was interesting to say the least.

Do not worry about what they say, if you love the theater and its music listen to it and tell everyone else you dont care what they say.
