Vile people.
I have read that this attack doesn't constitute as a hate crime which is pathetic. Hopefully they will get their comeuppance and be charged with something that will put them all away.

The part of this horrible story that is quite extraordinary is that citizen sleuths on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook located and identified the perpetrators.
Let's hope that the police and the DA are as thorough.

White heterosexual gang members in Philadelphia wearing neatly pressed untucked dress shirts, little black cocktail dresses and perpetual smirks should now be routinely stop and frisked on the street. The liquor license on that restaurant/gang activity hub should be pulled.
And we'll need to know if salmon vest took part in the beating so as not to be outed.

From the latest two updates on snafu's link, it seems like the Catholic school is taking swifter action than the police.

Suspects arrive at police headquarters for questioning
Update: Police said several of the individuals arrived at headquarters Wednesday night along with their lawyers and were questioned. There was no immediate information if any arrests were made.
Several defense attorneys with knowledge of the case, or who have been retained to represent some of those in the video, tell WCAU-TV that more video exists that will “paint a different picture” of what happened, alleging that one of the beating victims threw the first punch.
Catholic school fires coach over alleged gay bashing
Update: Thursday, Sept. 18, 4:00 a.m. EDT
An assistant basketball coach at Archbishop Wood High School was fired Wednesday due to his alleged involvement in the attack.
Philly.com reports that the coach, identified by a source close to the team as Fran McGlinn, 25, had been “serving as a coach on a contract basis,” according to a spokesman for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
McGlinn “was terminated this evening and will not be permitted to coach in any Archdiocesan school,” the spokesperson said. “We expect all those who work with students in our schools to model appropriate Christian behavior at all times.”
An earlier report indicated that many in the group were once classmates at Archbishop Wood High School.
Developing story. This report will be updated.

I'm sure he'll be made head coach at a non-Catholic Christian school based on his actions. There are hundreds, if not thousands, that abhor appropriate Christian behavior and discourage it.

One or more of the women will claim the gay couple "came on" to one or more of the meatheads.
it's all just a little bit of history repeating

Does it strike anyone else as surprising in this day and age that:
"Pennsylvania’s hate-crimes law, in any case, doesn’t cover crimes motivated by a person’s sexual orientation."
How in the last decade has something as basic as a hate-crimes law not been updated in a supposedly progressive state like Pennsylvania?

It didn't really dawn on me Someone in a Tree2, but now that you mention it, I do expect more from Pennsylvania.
Then again, morons are morons. There is no geographic limit on hate.

Pennsylvania had a hate-crimes statute that included sexual orientation in 2002, but the state supreme court overruled it in 2004.

Do you wish Pennsylvania had a hate-crimes statute for this, or do you think the punishment will be appropriate without one?

A move is afoot to use the federal hate-crimes law for this case. It has also sparked calls for PA to reinstate the law that was overturned previously.
Not only am I a Philadelphian, but my office is one half block away from where the beating took place. It is an affluent, very gay friendly neighborhood as is all of Center City Philadelphia.
I can tell you that the city is in shock that this happened.

This is a change.org petition asking the Pennsylvania givernor and state legislature to reinstate "sexual orientation" to the existing Pennsylvania hate-crimes statute.
It was removed by the state Supreme Court in 2008.
I've signed. Anyone else?

Posted: 9/18/14 at 4:57pmYou would hope that there wouldn't be a need for a Hate Crimes Bill. Since PA has one in place there is no reason that sexual preferance or identification shouldn't be included.

Apparently the Pennsylvania Supreme Court thought they found one.

This is also causing some very deserved agony in the Philadelphia archbishop, who has been particularly anti-gay in the past. He's had to condemn the actions of the gay-bashers his school trained so well, but he can't bring himself to say that the victims were attacked simply because they were gay.
This case might be the strongest case FOR hate-crimes legislation since the Matthew Shepard case. (And possibly stronger, if you believe any of the recent attacks on Shepard's character.)
Hate-crimes laws have nothing to do with freedom of speech or the hate-speech laws they have in Europe. It is simply adds more options for motive to current sentencing guidelines, which already take into consideration various motives (like a minimum sentence for premeditated homicide deserves to longer than a minimum sentence for criminally negligent manslaughter).
The people in that video were willing to hurt whatever gays they came across simply because they were gay. Hate-crimes statutes simply specify a specific minimum.
