It's not that bad. There have been far worse nominees in the category in the past. Baha Men won for Who Let the Dogs Out. Black Eyed Peas were nominated for Boom Boom Pow and Jennifer Lopez was nominated for Waiting for Tonight. Not to mention Madonna getting nominated for such smash hits as Celebration (2010) and Get Together (2007).

The article, to me, is a bit more insulting. "OMG, how could a song that only has 10,000 hits on YouTube be nominated?" Because obviously, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences that sat so long on including Disco music that the genre died before they first included category is hip on the new trends. These are the people who fought against MP3s because they want more money. They're begrudgingly using them now.

The musician in question hustled hard, got his song out there, and got nominated. It's not the first time and it won't be the last time. You think the academy arbitrarily changed the rules for Best New Artist so acts like Nicki Minaj and The Band Perry could be nominated even if they already were nominated for or won a Grammy? No. A major label petitioned for the change because it was such a travesty that Lady Gaga couldn't be nominated in that category the year before.

No one questions it when mass manufactured bubblegum pop gets a ton of nominations because a record label put out a huge campaign. Kathy Griffin can base stand up routines on how to set up a call bank to get people to vote for your album and no one blinks an eye. But heaven help us if an independent artist with only 10,000 hits on YouTube gets nominated in a category that's only starting to expand beyond Top 40 for the first time.

This used to be where Britney Spears and other pop stars were recognized because it was easy to campaign for with so little competition. This is no different.

With its zillions of categories and sales-based awards, the Grammys have never really seemed like anything more than a long compilation commercial break to me, so to hear they did something stupid and undeserving sounds like business as usual.
