Think outer boroughs.
If you're going to live in Manhattan, or anywhere near a subway station, you won't need or want a car, so you can drop a car payment and insurance from your current budget, as well as gas and maintenance costs. Any proceeds you may net from the sale of any current vehicle(s) could be used to offset moving costs.
That said, it ain't cheap. I grew up in Astoria, which is a wonderful, diverse neighborhood, and very accessible to Manhattan. Any neighborhood that produced Ethel Merman and Christopher Walken can't be bad, right?
