Is there no decency in this world?
Can people not sing live anymore?
Is there a curse?

Well, Bette Midler also claims never to have had plastic surgery, so something's not right with her in the first place.
Oh, and why should gays get married? All they do is screw around.

Your sarcasm does nothing for my grief.

Where was the sarcasm? I've always liked Bette Midler, but the older she gets the more of a fuddy duddy she's become.
And I think she looks great, but I don't believe it's because she "gets plenty of rest."

She gets rest.

I think you need to stick to threads where the people posting actually like you.
This isn't one of them.
I think the bigger deception here is that you think so many performers were singing "live" on TV shows of the '50s and '60s, '70s, etc.
Many of them weren't. And it was just as obvious then, if not more so.
This freak-out of over live singing started with Milli Vanilli, but that was because they weren't singing PERIOD. Not even on their records. And things just began to snowball from there.
If you doubt the "history lesson" take a look for yourself at clips from American Bandstand, the Tonys, the Oscars, Hullabaloo, the Hollywood Palace, and celebrity variety specials. Granted they weren't ALL "canned" either. Singers usually performed live on afternoon talk shows and Johnny Carson, to the best of my memory.
But I remember a lot of questionably-out-of-sync-lip-flap back in the day. A LOT of it.

callate la boca.... everyone like me! :)
Even more to the point, I thought the opening number as presented on THE VIEW was less than electric. Or inspired. I'll take her LIVE AT LAST opener -- remember that tour? This has a stale Branson feel.
But I did think Bette was wonderful to say such nice things about Celine and how hard she worked. Bette Midler is the single more exciting live performer I've seen in my lifetime -- and that includes The Beatles and Streisand. If her Vegas show is a bit too slick, a bit too canned, it probably has a cumulative impact. She can absolutely make any barn feel intimate, and directly connect to every one in an audience. She turned Radio City into a lounge.
What was the number?

Here's an even bigger heartbreaker: Angela Lansbury lip synced on the 1979 Tonys.
And Liza lip-synced on LIZA WITH A Z.

"And Liza lip-synced on LIZA WITH A Z."
Just goes to show you what show biz royalty gets you. Liza is still adored; Milli-Vanilli is reviled.
Oh please Goth you did not just defend Milli Vanilli using Liza as a reference point. Use your brain, please.
I thought Milli Vanilli lip-synced to other people's voices.

I'm not defending M/V. But I don't give Liza a pass for lip synching over 50% of a Broadway show.

Okay, I see my post was taken literally.
I might need to add a disclaimer like Sueleen from this point forward.
I'm FULLY aware that performers lip synced performances on TV shows in the "golden era".
I can always tell when someone is lip syncing.
And, Borstal, I have to admit even I was a little upset when I saw Liza with a Z lip synced, but I've since forgiven her.
Liza lip synched because of the dancing. If she sang live she would have been out of breath. Give her a break.
And Streisand at her best blows Midler out of the water every f**king time. Case closed.
Case opened.
Streisand lip-synced a lot on her old TV specials!
Just sayin'.
Are you sure? I may just be stupid, but at one point, she pulled the mic back too far and and her voice faded mid-word.
She didn't.
