I'm dying...

For a good debate!

If you care to share...where are you on the pro-life/pro-choice scale...and why?

re: I'm dying...

alright...I'll take the bait...I just hope I don't regret it later

I have mixed feelings about the subject at hand. I think that abortion is alright in cases of rape or incest or in cases where the mother's life is in jeopardy. I know that everyone has a right to choose what they feel is right but I think that having an abortion just because you were irresponsible is wrong. I'm not saying that everyone who gets an abortion is irresponsible but that seems to be the fact in a lot of cases. I do believe that when you are pregnant there is life inside of you and if you get rid of that life you are commiting murder.

Well there you go...feel free to debate or throw stones (please don't throw them at my head...it's sensitive)

pro-choice all the way, don't need any more unwanted kids in this world. contraceptives are essentially pro-choice to begin with anyway.

re: I'm dying...

I'm about halfway on the scale, but lenient to pro-choice. I don't want to overpopulate the world, but the idea of killing someone before they have a chance to live seems bad. I mean, we could be killing mini-Mozarts here!

I can understand some situations.
Those that are pregnant because of rape? It seems unfair to them that they should go through all this suffering because A) it wasn't their choice to begin with and B) now they have no way out of it but to have this baby.
But those...stupid women that just have sex giddily and not expect to get pregnant and see abortion as an easy way out just digusts me. It's your responsibility, so take it. I can understand if you're poor, and not able to support the baby. Adoption centers are just overflowing today. But people who are aware of the consequences and pretend to "play dumb" just..UGH. ::snarl::

Can't stand them.

Pro-Choice. I'm a VERY liberal person.

However, I do agree that stupid people who pretend to play dumb should NOT use abortion as their 'backup contraceptive.' However, on that note--should people such as these seriously raise their own child??? In such a circumstance? Ugh. I wouldn't want a kid to deal with that kind of parent.

re: I'm dying...

Lets mix it up a little, shall we?

I've always been pro-life...my school notebook last year was covered in anti-abortion stickers and such, but recently I've come to the realization that it's not black and white--killing baby vs. not killing baby.

In addition, I think that if abortion wasn't an option, there would be fewer (not much, I know) high school students fooling around, because they don't have their loop hole. There's no, "Don't worry about it, you can just get an abortion."

In cases of rape...who am I to judge? If it's going to be that traumatic for you, by all means...you've been through more than enough already. Me personally, I don't think I could do it.

re: I'm dying...

i think it's wrong to kill an unborn person, and that's what an embryo (i hate that word) is. life does not begin at birth. life begins at contraception. the baby starts growing and developing immediately. birth is simply a change of environments ... from fluid-breathing to air-breathing. the baby keeps right on growing and developing after birth.

HOWEVER, i would NEVER take away the right of a mother to choose what is best for her. i think to take an unborn life is wrong and something too many people take far too lightly. but it's not an issue that can be legislated. the mother must make the decision and SHE's the one who has to live with.

re: I'm dying...

moon, i used to be very pro-life also (and i'm still pro-life!). i've even participated in a pro-life march before. and if anyone has read details of what actually happens to the baby in an abortion, and looks at the staggering death figures, it's quite dramatic. i also used to feel that ROW v WADE was the blackest day in our country's history. BUT now i realize that it's NOT something that can be legislated because, as you say, it's NOT a black/white issue. it has to be left up to the woman.

I don't agree with this at all. The stigma of unwanted pregnancy at that age hasn't gone away. Neither, incidentally, for most women has the stigma of having an abortion been removed. It's also incorrect to think abortion will go away just because it's not legal.

i'd rather it be LEGAL and people be INFORMED than the other way around.

I completely agree, and I'm not saying that promiscuity in students should be a reason to outlaw abortion, it's just something to think about. I know I've heard a lot of students at my school saying something along those lines.

re: I'm dying...

I'm liberal, very, so I am pro-choice all the way. I don't really want to get into this b/c pro-lifers can be incredibly preachy (not saying you guys are being, but ones I've talked to face to face) but I think there are wayy too many unwanted children in the world. Why add more? Are you going to go out and adopt the baby that legislation forced into existance? PRobably not!

Also forcing a woman to have a baby who has been raped is disgusting and barbaric.

But I also don't approve of using it as birth control. It's a big deal and shouldn't be used lightly. My roommate 2 yrs ago had an abortion. She was a whore, and any respect I had for her when down the drain right then.

It's a woman's body and no one should tell her what to do with it!

Edit: Ugg I need to learn to shut up sometimes (but I'm so damn opionated!)...I hate getting into debates over the internet, they always end badly. People just yell at each other and preach.

re: I'm dying...

Exactly, ct.

This is probably a stupid idea, but oblige me...

I think if someone is planning on having an abortion, they should have to have some sort of conseling beforehand. It's not just a walk into a clinic and they zap you with a magic wand and zippity zippity zam--no baby! Also, when pregnant (and a teenager), there are a million thoughts going through your head, how do you know that you're not going to change your mind the next day?

re: I'm dying...

i think this has been a very civil discussion re: I'm dying...

btw ... the percentage of abortions performed because of rape or incest is EXTREMELY low ... like way less than 1 percent.

i don't know what the figures are now, but i've seen figures from the past when more abortions were recorded than live births. and that's very sad to me.

re: I'm dying...

Something I don't like is how everyone jumps to the rape/incest argument...

What if it's neither of those? Is it still okay?

re: I'm dying...

There are TONS of circumstances I could dish out. But A) I can't think of any and B) it's the most strongest argument. It wins sympathy points and it's very true.

ETA: Wow, that sounded stupid. I can't think of any AT THE MOMENT. There are tons of circumstances where abortion seems "right" and where it seems horribly wrong. But ultimately, I believe it's up to the mother. It's really her choice whether she wants to do it or not. But it's not a choice that should be taken lightly as it is today.

re: I'm dying...

Is it still ok? For you it might not be, but perhaps for someone else it is. What right does anyone (except the father in consensual sex) have to judge others for having an abortion? It's a VERY personal decision. (p.s., no contraceptive is 100% failsafe - even at 98% efficacy having sex once a week statistically results in pregnancy within a year)

re: I'm dying...

'In addition, I think that if abortion wasn't an option, there would be fewer (not much, I know) high school students fooling around, because they don't have their loop hole. There's no, "Don't worry about it, you can just get an abortion." '

In those cases, as a society we need to put our effort and resources to address those kinds of lack of judgements and values. We can protect a woman's right to choose and still promote sexual responsibility. I don't believe that making abortion illegal is going to help solve the problem you mentioned. You can only do that through education, and the education needs to go deeper than merely covering the different methods of birth-control.

'I think if someone is planning on having an abortion, they should have to have some sort of conseling beforehand. It's not just a walk into a clinic and they zap you with a magic wand and zippity zippity zam--no baby!'

Hm. Has this really been your experience? The people I know who have gone through this did go through counseling beforehand. For each of them, the experience was a wrenching one, emotionally and physically.

re: I'm dying...

When I read the title I thought that you were literally dying.

Anyway, I think that no one can stop what teenagers do. If they have sex, that's their choice.

The option of abortion should stay because if the teenager was raped, she would need one. If an alchoholic woman was raped, she would like an abortion.

There are many different cases so it's hard to talk about it in general. If we could debate about a case it would be easier to debate about.
