re: I'm in awe...........Gwen Verdon

I'm sure that's the reason, Glebb..the idea of the Father Of Our Country shtupping with Lola while Martha wasn't around (or the idea of George shtupping, period) made a lot of Hollywood censors uncomfortable. It was a 1950s Broadway commie pinko fag property, n' all.

I LOVE Gwen, and I'm probally one of the few "younger" people who even knows who she is!

She was an amazing dancer obviously - but man could Gwen sing before her throat issues! She had such a good voice. Then the throat issues happened in Charity, and continued on in Chicago. Very sad.

Ah vbplayer, that might be a help.
I've only seen it once (in my adult years) but is it from Call Me Madam?

Sorry Glebb, I read avatar and not signature. The signature looks like a parody of "A Star Fell Out of Heaven" and I think the singer was Vera Lynn. Not sure where these lyrics are from.

It's ok VB. I'm sure the Master will tell us. :)

I think it helped that she was a good singer before the throat issues so when they started she could negotiate her problems well. I loved both voices...before and after. She was the top!

vbplayer, you win the Cupie Doll - it is indeed Merman in a never-used hair and costume test for THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW MUSINESS. It's supremely odd to see Ethel Merman with Marilyn's hair, but once you get used to it, she looks OK.

My signature is a line from "I'm Olga From The Volga" (Mack Gordon - Harry Revel) sung by Joan Davis in the Sonja Heinie film THIN ICE.

first of all, i think BOB was lucky he married Gwen.

I'm a huge fan and I must say, she can hang with Diane, Meryl, and Hume in Marvin's Room...she was also great in Cocoon...and a few small roles in a couple of Woody's movies

Incred technique & Charisma. In every way.
Just an FYI tho- Fosse & Verdon never divorced, only seperated, @ the time of his death she was still Mrs Fosse.

For the post earlier^

During Sweet Charity - I believe it was at a rehearsal or such. A feather from one of the costumes got wrapped around her vocal chords, and she almost lost her voice.

That's why with Charity she got so raspy, she never sounded like that in previous shows.

Then in Chicago. She had polyps on her throat, and she had to get them suregorically removed.

Such a shame - the woman had such a good voice. I do enjoy her raspiness on Charity and Chicago. But I miss the beltier Gwen, we heard in previous shows.
