Sadly, I have not been on Broadway (so far I've been living on the wrong coast), but I make my living in musical theater in the Los Angeles area, and have a few friends currently in B'way shows. =)

I don't work with just one theater, and I certainly don't do theater "in my spare time." It's how I make my living and takes up ALL my time. 
I'm an Equity actress, and I just do show after show after show... Shows run for a much shorter period of time out here, so you're constantly auditioning and going from project to project. I've worked at the Geffen Playhouse in LA, Fullerton Civic Light Opera, the Welk Resort Theater in San Diego, Saddleback Civic Light Opera in Mission Viejo, etc. It's a living. That sounds like so much fun, I would give anything to be able to do that. Just out of curiousity...what's an Equity actress...or just Equity in general. I was looking at an audition and it said to bring your Equity membership card with you...so can you please explain to me what this is...thanx :)

No worries at all. I didn't think you were being rude, I just thought the idea of me doing theater in my spare time was funny, given how over-extended I am right now. It was like an inside joke - just for me! :-P
Anyway, "Equity" or "Actors' Equity Association" or "AEA" is "the union of American theatrical actors and stage managers." Broadway shows are all Equity. Regional theaters are a mixed bag. Basically, if you're trying to go to an Equity open call, but you're non-union, you'd have to wait til every union member who is there gets seen before you can be seen. But I'm guessing that in NYC, the non-union folks rarely make it in to the audition room, 'cause so many union actors go to every open call. Does that make sense?

I'm "sorta" new.. joined in the last month...
oh, and on the subject of EQUITY.. it's a catch22 out here... if you become Equity, you then cut out 98% of the work and the work that does come is not enough to make a living, so you'd have to travel a lot throughout the NW and West Coast.. being more of a vagaond than others need to be..
I love Seattle, though.. so I work a day job I loathe and make little at the work that I adore...
