I'm not trying to be chauvinistic, but aren't men stronger then women?

The thing is calling someone "ignorant," even if they are wrong, is not the way to handle a discussion.
The argument you are making has been used for years to determine "women" as a category unfit for various things, despite as you note the fact that many women are stronger than all but the strongest of men.
By saying things like it is "just a fact" it lessens overall impact of what you say. Facts are never "just facts" there is too much to interpret and challenge.
I was not saying this is the same as saying "women are less inteligent" but that was once supported by "facts" as well. The challenge is not to say men are "stronger" because that word does have connotations of "overall superiority" and is the main problem.

jaykid, you totally missed the point.......obviously you are way to young to remember Billie Jean King beating Bobby Riggs.
and you totally missted the point that sweeping generalizations are simply wrong, prejudicial, and offensive. And they only make the person making them look bad.
I am assuming you are young. Few adults I know would present a post in this manner

Elphaba, I'm not too young to remember the King/Riggs battle, and I loved every second of it - including all the hype surrounding it. I was a feminist kid. But we're not talking about individual cases here - there will always be exceptions.
But it is a FACT that men are built to be physically stronger. It's not offensive. It just IS. Being a women includes different kinds of advantages over being a man, and vice versa.

Rath, I've seen some female Russian shotputters who would put Ahnold to shame.....
I just never have liked sweeping generalizations......I think there are appropriate ways to put things....and I just think the way this post started was insulting.......and you, and I have a right to our views.......
(and I still love ya!)

Those shotputters are, again, exceptions. They spend their lives building their bodies. I'm glad men are stronger and have to lift the heavy stuff and I don't.
I just don't find this to be a sweeping generalization - that makes it sound like it's a put-down of some kind. It is not. Women can withstand pain better than men, in general. That's why we have the babies. That's a fact as well. You're not offended by that, are you? It's just a fact.
And I love ya too, Elph.

I guess the point for me is that while the generalization is true at the fundamental level--the structure of the male vs. the structure of the female of our species--any discussion beyond that is kind of pointless, as we have to get into specifics, and there are v. strong women and v. weak men.
I tried to take a sip of Rath's beer at Ann H. Callaway on Monday, and she sent me flying. Word!

I think your statement is just too general. Be specific.
"The fastest man can run faster than the fastest woman"
"On average, men can pick up heavier things than women"
"Men give better BJs than women"
Those sorts of things. The idea of "stronger" is a misnomer. Women are stronger in a number of ways (their ability to heal, their toleration of pain, their ability to improve their psychological health, etc). The trick is to qualify your statement by being specific, not by saying "by stronger, i mean..." Just be specific so you don't have to redefine words.

I was hoping it would just slip by and no one would notice.
Well, we do know the machinery more personally, and on average, our mouths and tongues are bigger.

Posted: 11/10/05 at 10:46amI'd actually like to be pregnant, and deliver. But after that, I'm not interested.

Posted: 11/11/05 at 12:56amRath, I feel the same way! My friends think that I'm crazy, but I know that even if I'm never in a position to support a child, I would still love to be a surrogate mother. I think that carrying a baby would be incredible, and that it would surely grow me as a person.

Posted: 11/11/05 at 1:05amEh, who cares if you can carry a a cart full of beer kegs? Can you push a 10 lb. oblong object out of a hole that's usually only a a few millimeters wide? Now that's a useful ability.

Women can tolerate pain better? Who says? Women give birth because they have the baby-carrying parts, not because they tolerate pain better.
Maybe I'm reading this conversation too literally. I'm going to take a Lortab and go lie back down.

This seems to say women feel more pain than men.

Posted: 11/11/05 at 12:18pmThis study doesn't seem to say how WELL people deal with pain, it says that women experience more pain than men. I would conclude, based on that, that women deal with pain better (after all, they live longer than men...despite feeling more pain).
