Hey Everyone,
I'm needing your help again to find a very specific type of song for my fast-approaching (May 19-20) cabaret show, "Who's Your Daddy?"
Most of my song list is full of ballads, and intense serious songs, with a few comic numbers throughout...but I need a bit of a crazed and/or angry "daddy" song to fully cover the subject of daddyhood/fatherhood....thematically and musically.
Already thought of the following:
Fatherhood Blues from Baby
Everyone Hates Their Parents from Falsettoland
I've Heard it All Before from Shenandoah
But the first two are written as group numbers, and would have to be really revamped and edited last one is more "Anti-War" than specifically about fatherhood.
I'm still keep searching, but I know there's a wealth of knowledge among all of us there...and ideas would be appreciated.
Warm Regards to You All!
Windy
"I hate men" from Kiss Me Kate
If you dont mind going outside the Broadway genre and want something you can make *very* twisted...
Who's Your Daddy
How about Kids, from Bye Bye Birdie?
SeanMartin: Toby Keith's WHO'S YOUR DADDY is already picked as my opening number!! Great minds think alike!
madbrian: great idea!!! thanks!

If you need a fluffer to help you get in touch with your angry daddy, you know where to reach me.
What about a campy version of Papa Don't Preach where you change the lyrics to make it from the father's perspective.
Papa is here and he's going to be upset
'Cause you were always my+ little girl
But I should know by now you're not a baby
I always taught you right from wrong
You need my help and daddy will be strong
I may not be young sweetheart
But I know what I'm saying
The one I warned you all about
The one I said you could do without
You're in an awful mess, and I don't mean maybe - please
[Chorus:]
You say...
Papa don't preach, but you're in trouble deep
Papa don't preach, I've been losing sleep
But I made up my mind, you're not keeping that baby, oh
you're not keeping that baby, mmm...
At this point you shift into full on serial killer over the top comedy with chainsaw dancers...
Wait, maybe you should keep looking. Nevermind. :)
The only thing I can think of is Tevye's Monologue (that's what the song is called - "They gave each a pledge...") but that seems quite specific for a cabaret performance.
Country music has a lot of fun stuff in this genre. Rewrite the POV and you could do Garth Brooks' "The Night I Called the Old Man Out".
Chatted with my director and he's really looking for an 11:00 "I Am What I Am" number.....a male "Rose's Turn," if you will.
Something similar in tone to "I Stayed" from A Catered Affair....which is a great song, but is more about relationships between spouses, rather than the relationship between father and child.
"Soliloquy" while not funny, really is about a father's relationship with his children (or what he imagines it will be like-he even imagines a son, then a daughter). It's not exactly an eleven o'clock number, but it sure has the wallop of a "Rose's Turn".
Perhaps not an exact fit, but Meditation, from Shenandoah, might be worth a look.

This probably isn't what you want, but it's funny...

First off....I am so gratefuly for all of the help and ideas. You really have no idea how much I appreciate this, and you introducing me to some songs I might never have heard.
Wally that song is hysterical, and it destined to be in my next show! Love it!
And I love Shenendoah, so much! I saw it in the Lincon Center way backi in 1976, and it still haunts me...."Meditation" and "I've Heard It All Before" are tremendous songs, but not the best fit....beautifully written, but too show specific.
"The Night I Called the Old Man Out" does have some possibilities. :)

You might look at "Angry Guy/Lovely Day" from 3 Guys Naked From The Waist Down. It's more an angry guy song, but you might be able to tweek the lyrics. The only trouble is that the song is more talk than singing.
And if you could squeeze in one more ballad "A Father Now" from the same musical is really nice.
Papa love Mambo is definitely pervy..........BAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Who's the Man from Witches of Eastwick might work, though it may need a bit of tweaking. It could definitely be fun to perform in leather daddy gear...
Darryl-
Who's the man? Who's the man?
Who's the soul who had control since this whole thing began?
Who wears the pants?
Who holds the key?
More to the point, who's got a big one swinging down to his knee?
Metaphorically...
Who gets it done when no-one else can?
I ask you! Who's the man?
What makes a king? Defines the boss?
A family crest, a hairy chest, and testes two feet across!
And in the bed- snap crackle pop!
Sure times have changed, but by and large the man still comes out on top.
On a good night...
Who has the goods? Who has the plan? Three guesses!
Now as everyone knows,
when women are near a guy has to say what a girl wants to hear.
But when he's alone though, he shouts loud and clear,
the truth of it all-
that in the final act, God willing,
its the man who gets top billing.
Come on guys, daddy's taking it home!
Darryl and Men-
Who got here first? Huh? That ain't no fib!
Yeah, life was chicken wings and beer till Adam coughed up that rib-
yet though the years and through the grief,
on other's eyes a guy's still measured by the size of his leaf!
So to speak...
just like it was when this big world began-
I tell ya; who's the maaaaaaaaaaaan?!?
Say your world is in trouble, at war,
with tempers aflame;
do you turn to the warm reflections of some sensitive dame,
or run to that hairy ape who wrote the freaking rules of the game?
Who's going to run the goddam show when the **** hits the fan?
I'm talking more beast than beauty,
more Peter than Pan.
You don't believe me, read your bible,
its there in the original plan!
No question- who's the man?
Darryl-
Who's the man?
Mister Matt.....I love you!
Awww...I love you too, Windy!

"Kids" from BYE BYE BIRDIE
"One of the Good Guys" isn't my favorite Maltby & Shire song, and it too focuses more on husband/wife than father/son, but it stands alone and fits the same character.
There's also "Fathers of Fathers", but it's about grown men and their relationship to their own fathers, not their children.
What about "Fathers and Sons" from "Working". Though it's not comic, you could play it angry.
