when I was watching it I was thinking 'When did this become a polka song?'
And Apollo is a cutie.
"If we don't live happily ever after at least we survive until the end of the week!" -Kermit the frog "I need the money... it costs a lot to look this cheap!" -Dolly P. "Oh please, Over at 'Gypsy' Patti LuPone hasn't even alienated her first daughter yet!" Mary Testa in "Xanadu" "...Like a drunk Chita Rivera!" Robin de Jesus in "In the Heights"
"B*tch, I don't know your life." -Xanadu After that if he still doesn't understand why you were uncomfortable and are now infuriated, kick him again but this time with Jazz Hands!!! -KillerTofuWhen I was a wee lad, I decided to go by myself to my first gay bar. I was so scared...I had NEVER been to one before. There was a new place right by where I lived and I had no idea what it was like, I just knew I had to go. I walked in and the first thing I saw were two cowboy queens with hats and all on the dancefloor doing some sort of country and western Fred-n-Ginger style dance to Madonna's dance mix of "Don't Cry for Me...". I left the bar seriously wondering if the puss wasn't such an unattainable option after all.

Muhlethaler: Nope. I didn't want Madonna to sound like Lupone. Not one bit. There are actually a few actresses whom I've liked better in the role than Lupone, although I think she was great. And I don't find Madonna an "easy target." I quite respect her as an entertainer. I just don't like her uneven vibrato, and yes, she was most definitely pitch corrected (not a theory, a fact from friends who worked on the film), and if you know what to listen for, you can tell, anyway. And as I said earlier in the thread, I actually like a lot of Madonna's stuff. Her vocal "foibles" - if you will - don't bother me at all on her own music. It's when she tries to go more "legit" that it bugs me. The Babyface-penned song "Take A Bow" bugged me for the exact same reasons. But like I said before, to each his own. I'm glad many people enjoyed Madonna's interpretation. That's what makes a horse race.
HOWEVER, this thread was NOT supposed to be about Madonna! It was supposed to be about that awful version on "Dancing With The Stars" last night! LOL
DBillyP: Yes, just a dreadful choice.
One final note. His name is APOLO. Not Apollo.

(Sorry erika, I am about to focus on Madonna )
I actually liked Madonna in the film and was disappointed that she was not nominated for an Oscar. I was very impressed when she, after not being nominated, was bold enough to offer to sing on the telecast. Other, lesser mortals have not been so kind when snubbed.
i.e. Barbra Streisand.
I mentioned no names ...
The most annoying thing about Madonna in the movie was that they had to lower the score, it changed the piece. She acted it well, but that just bothered the SH*T out of me. (Especially in A New Argentina, I was ready to throw things at the screen the way she spoke those lines)
I love Madonna, I hate Madonna in Evita.

Karen Carpenter sang the best version of 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' I've ever heard, ever
Muhlethaler, Madonna is not that strong of a singer. I've even heard some of her biggest fans admit this. Even with the key/range changes made to the songs in the movie, it's still hard to believe that she could possibly sing the score without some electronic help. There's nothing wrong with that, it's a movie. It's actually expected. I love Nicole Kidman's performance in Moulin Rouge regardless.
It was her "Buenos Aires" I most disliked. It lacked the energy that the song is all about.

Soapy, I almost agree with you. It is fine to lower keys and digital edit, but the fact that they had to lower the key and make range changes is ridiculous when you take into account that Madonna is not known for her acting but her "singing". If you're going to cast a singer cast someone who can sing the score. If not cast and dub an amazing actor who can handle the character. That's what made me angry about this Evita movie.
Back on topic, that version Erika is talking about is a hot mess.
