I once was blind, but now I see...

This just happened to me an hour ago. My eyes are still swollen and my throat is hoarse from screaming and crying so much. I never considered myself to be naive, but I feel like I'm seeing society in a new light. Today was the first time I've ever experienced serious racial discrimination.

It's ironic because being a Chinese in Vancouver, there's a bit of "minor" discrimination since there's such a huge Asian population here, but mostly in the form of stereotyping and such.

But today was the first time someone actually threw my heritage in my face and tried to run me over with his car. (Keep in mind I know this isn't just a problem with white people vs. Chinese people - I'm just recounting my own experience today.)

I was at the checkout counter at a store and a man was standing behind us. He was slight white man, dressed like a construction worker. Because our items were taking a long time, he got to go ahead. I wasn't paying attention to him when he asked me quietly to move out of the way so he could use the Interac machine, but I quickly obliged when I heard him.

As he was leaving the store, he muttered for my mom and I to "Get the F*CK outta my way, Asians." I waited about 20 seconds in shock, until I flew out behind him into the parking lot, my mom yelling at me not to go.

I was about 30 feet behind him and I yelled, "Excuse me, if you've got a problem with me, saying to my FACE instead of MUTTERING IT, ASSHOLE!" The guy looked behind, and then got into his big green truck.

I was standing, shocked and shaking, in the middle of the parking lot. I started walking back to the store and apologized to the startled fellow having a smoke nearby. Suddenly I hear the roar of the guy's truck coming towards me.

I turned around, and the guy slammed on his acceleration, going at about 40mph. If I had waited a second sooner, I would have been dead. Period.

So the guy blows past me, looks at me, and the look in his eyes was just pure...I can't explain it. Just...disgust. Or hatred. He turns 90 degrees, rolls down his window and says, "GET OUT OF CANADA, YOU F*CKING CHINK!!" and blows out of the parking lot. I couldn't get his licence plate number and I was going to go back and get his Interac receipt from the store, but my mom said what would be the point, and that I shouldn't have went after him. My dad supported this.

Yes, my parents, who have always tried to hammer "Asian honor" into my head when I was growing up, told me it was my fault I got myself into this situation and that I shouldn't have went after him. They said I needed to pick my battles, because let's say the guy had hit me and I was paralyzed for life, he would only get maybe 2 years on jail tops, but my life is ruined forever.

Is that what it's really come down to? How can we win if people like this are not only NOT penalized for these sorts of hate crimes, but are in fact POSITIVELY REINFORCED to continue doing this because everyone is helpless to fight them?

I'm so disillusioned and jaded right now. It's made me seriously re-think law school, to say the least. My parents are right. I can't make a difference, much less change the world. And the legal system and society is far too F*CKED UP for the real bad guys to go behind bars. So what do I think I'm going to achieve by going into this profession? This racist bastard here, who tried to run me over, would barely get a slap on the wrist if he had hit me. And because I was quick enough to jump out of the way, he doesn't even get a little reprimand. Does someone need to die before justice is served? And even then, justice is only served in small doses hardly proportionate to the crime.

So yeah, I'm kinda distraught right now. Thanks for reading. I know this may seem trivial and I'm sure you guys may have had experienced incidents like this, but it was a first time for me, and it was a real eye opener. I had to let this out because surprisingly, none of my white or even minority friends seem to get this. It seems like everyone's accepted this sort of discrimination and decided that since you can't fight it, you have to accept it, and watch your back (literally, in my case) and play the game. And lose. I mean, I'm still alive, but who's the winner here? It's not me.

Trivial?? Hardly.

I'm so sorry you had to experience that. People like that should be wiped from the face of the earth.

i'm sorry you had to go through that experience, tiff. i love you, and all my asian friends! asians are awesome! re: I once was blind, but now I see...

this past month has definitely opened my eyes to the discrimination that still exists. between the taye/idina thing, and now this... society as a whole still has a long way to go.

I'm sorry this happened to you. It is shocking and sad but I guess it will make you stronger. Just have faith that many people do live by a code of honor and grace. Being kind is important.

Tiff,

I am beyond disgusted. In theory it's easy to say, oh yes, discrimination still exists, blah blah blah, isn't it awful...but to hear a story like this about someone I care about?? A whole new ball of wax.

This was NOT trivial, to you, me, nor anyone who hears about it.

And I think you should go to law school - you are SO smart and together - you would be the best advocate for people who'll really need you. Think long and hard before you make that decision. You CAN make a difference.

re: I once was blind, but now I see...

That's awful Tiff. What a horrific experience -- in a place where you least expect it (Vancouver), it's even more unnerving. I can see where your parents are coming from, though; it's not that you shouldn't stand up for yourself (you should), it's just that in this crazy world, you don't know what's going to happen. He could have pulled a gun on you or something; he almost ran you over, after all. He seemed crazy enough.

That a$$hole is probably just scared that we Chinese are taking over the globe. Don't worry, we'll boil him alive in the New World Order. re: I once was blind, but now I see...

re: I once was blind, but now I see...

I'm so sorry Tiff, that's horrid. I can only re-iterate what others have said. It horrifies me that these things still happen and it horrifies me even more that people accept it. It's never okay, and I can't understand people who aren't upset about it.

re: I once was blind, but now I see...

Tiff, there is not one thing trivial about someone trying to run you over, especially because of your race.

I certainly believe that you've seen the world in a new light, and please, consider what it's teaching you. Becoming a lawyer is a chance to make a difference- maybe someday you could give another victim of racism the peace of mind she deserves by taking her lawsuit.

re: I once was blind, but now I see...

Tiff - not at all trivial, and I'm very sorry you had to deal with that.

As to everything else you mentioned, about law school, etc. - give it a couple of days. You're really angry right now (understandably so), but what Rath said was right re: I once was blind, but now I see....

And for the most part, I believe most people do NOT accept these kinds of behavior. Actively combating it is another thing, though, and perhaps hasn't happened as much as it should.

re: I once was blind, but now I see...

Thanks so much for the kind words from all of you. I appreciate them more than you can imagine right now. Although maybe posting this thread was counterproductive because I stopped crying after it was posted, and now I'm tearing up all over again reading your guys's responses. Thanks so very much. Genuinely.

I'll still mull over law school. (I can't let go of the image of me in fitted powersuits and stilettos. re: I once was blind, but now I see...) It just disheartens me to think that I'm playing someone else's game and not making a dent, you know?

tiff, you can definitely make a difference in law school! just by helping a SINGLE person in the SLIGHTEST way, it will be worth it.

re: I once was blind, but now I see...

Tiff, if you let one racist bastard kill your dream than you're the one who's game is dented. Please, do give it a few days before you make any decisions.

And not make a difference? I'm sure there are people who will differ with you on that, like the victims. If you can do something to assure them that no one else will suffer what they did, then you have impacted the world. You might not rewrite the Canadian law book, but you can do a world of difference in the lives of individuals.

That image heartens me as well, Tiff...

Seriously - you WILL make a dent someday - and when you do, you will know that you had the will and fortitude to do it BECAUSE of what happened to you today. BECAUSE you are going to do your damndest to keep it from happening to as many people as possible.

re: I once was blind, but now I see...

hey tiff -

as an african-american (a term that i actually despise) i SOOOOO empathize.

Can't tell you how many times in my life i've been called "n*" and spat upon - right in oh-so-liberal NYC!!!

Unfortunately - this is a DEEEP part of human nature and if you study your world history well that fact will reveal itself.

and, your folks were right in that you must pick your battles more carefully.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS HATE MUST NEVER WIN - and too see you dead or cripple (regardless of the consequences) would be a win for him and his - why? because that would be one less "chink" on the planet and he would go to jail a hero..

harsh as this sounds THIS IS THE REALITY OF HUMAN NATURE! Sucks huh? The objective is to rise above it... in your own thinking or behavior.

NEVER sink to hatred yourself
NEVER sink to hatred OF SELF (which is where hatred of others comes from..)
NEVER let 'em see you sweat (as opposed to flying off and yelling at him - being calm and getting his info from the clerk would have been a better way to go....)

TEACH THOSE AROUND YOU whenever you can...
I can't tell you how many "stupid white people" questions I've answered over the years...

do i like it? NO - is it necessary YES otherwise they will continue to be ignorant and the hatred will go on...

this is NO EASY TASK - it will NOT HAPPEN OVERNIGHT.

Black people in the states (and worldwide) have been fighting this battle for over 400 years (not to sound cliche - I can barely utter that phrase without giggling... re: I once was blind, but now I see...

but you understand my point.

The first time is always the hardest - but now that you "see" use it to make you stronger.

if we could learn to see our similarites instead of focusing on our differences - the world would be a vastly different place

but - our deepset insecurites force us to do whatever we can to feel better about ourselves - and the easiest way to do that is to subjigate(sp?) others..... you see it over and over in every aspect of life.

learn to identify it early - it will make it easier for you to walk around those issues without conflict - and when you are confronted - you will be able to stand your ground without losing your cool..

someday I'll tell you the Wisconsin story....
