Me too! Damn S. Florida!

I went to open my door to come into my apartment the other day. I couldn't even get the key into the lock or around the doorknob- it was all full of ants. I went to my car, got a water bottle, poured it on them and then opened it.

I can't use Raid because I'm allergic to it.

Dottie, I don't know about the traps although if they have any smell like the Raid spray, I will be allergic. I am allergic to a lot of stuff.

I once used this cleaning product and before I knew it, I had hives and my tongue was swelling up.
I've gotta be very careful.

We live in Florida, I never leave food anywhere. It's 85 F today. And we are in Winter! This is not NY.

My parents used to live in Florida and they had "sweet" ants - they only like sugar-based food. If these are the little tiny ants that almost look like dark sand, you have to get the traps designed for them - the bait is not messy, and it seems to work really well, although it may have to be used fairly frequently. Wish I could give you a specific product name but the hardware stores should be able to tell you what to use.

I never, ever leave food out. I even put closed boxes of pasta in a zip lock bag.
Still, there are ants.

I can only imagine what it would be like if I DID leave food out.

I'm not sure of the most inexpensive way, but I think it can be achieved without nasty products. Borax...mix it with sugar and water, and place it in like shallow containers around where the ants are...I remember reading that in some sheet of ecofriendly household suggestions. Baking soda works wonders on silver!

[edit] Their last suggestion seems really ideal...

Combine: 1 part active yeast, 2 parts molasses and 1 part sugar. Mix the ingredients well. Drop a teaspoonful on several small squares of white paper. Place the paper squares along ant trails where they will not be disturbed. How does it work? The ants are attracted to the sugary feast and consume it readily. The action of the yeast, however, produces gas in their bellies and they can not rid themselves of it. They essentially pop. The best part of this method of alternative pest control is that it utilizes no volatile poisons which could harm you or your family or your pets.

Mix ½ cup molasses and ½ cup peanut butter and 1 packet of active dry yeast.

As far as the real ants... They want food, or water. Make sure you don't have any for them.

My parents didn't leave food out either and my mom was a cleaning nut. The ants are so small that they can live off food residue in your fingerprints! That is why they tend to end up on handles and counters!

Get the little round ant traps. They are full of a poison bait and the ants go in, get some and take it back to their nest. They are also good because the poison is INSIDE the case so pets or little kids can't get at it.

And I think I read somewhere the exploding ant thing was a myth.

Sprinkle cinnamon around the places you see the ants coming from. Somehow ants don't like cinnamon. I've tried it and it works (with the little tiny balck ants).
