I want to quit my job right now...

My boss just called and has told me that she is taking my vacation time away from me because her sister quit. Her sister has done this to her at previous jobs before. So now after taking classes all summer, working my butt off for her at work. Teaching myself basic Korean so that I could help out with the Korean exchange students. I have been looking forward to this vaction all summer because it is the only break I will get and I desperatly need it. I am half tempted to quit, but I have ethics and I do not want the children to suffer because of something that I did. I need a drink!

Wow. That is legal? I've been asked before to change vacation plans because work's gotten busy, but never 'told' I had to change my plans.

I don't know, but that is what she said. I have paid money on a beach house and I bought tickets for the 5th to see a Nationals baseball game. Unless she is willing to reimburse all of that money to me...I don't know what to do. I'm not happy though.

Kel - you definitely need to revisit this issue with her. The is just wrong. Show her the invoices for everything you've paid for. Maybe she's so clueless that she doesn't realize the ramifications of her decision. But this is just wrong.

I don't have the invoices. My sister in law paid for the house and we sent her the money. I will tell her that I will work the time I was suposed to work, but I will "be sick" on the days that I was supposed to be off. I have spent money and I will not throw it away for her family problems.

See... when worked has asked me to change vacation plans, the fact that they'd reimburse any expenses incurred was explicit.

The wonderful world of childcare/education doesn't have such luxuries. We get crapped on my kids and their parents and now our bosses as well...

I am not rethinking my education degree, but I am seriously rethinking ever working for this program again. I had a wonderfully cushy job that I took a leave of absence for to help my boss out because she needed a french teacher and I speak french. Screw that...

Thanks Beav, I only had a week left, its just a summer program that I agreed to work out to help my boss. I have my old job waiting for me when I get back from my supposed vacation. I don't have invoices because as I said earlier that my sister in law paid for the house and we reimbursed her for our part. My boss' sister is insane and she has done this to my boss before at another job that I worked at with them. She hired her sister and then a week later her sister quit. Its insane! I am so P-ed off!

Was the vacation request ever done in writing? If so, just show her that and say, "Sorry....Beeatch"

My (ex) boss tried that to me one time. I took my weekly vacation to work on a benefit (that I had done for 12 years) and the last year, after getting her approval, she took the same time off, and then tried to have me fired for leaving.

Paperwork is a great thing to fall back on.

Sadly no...she is supposedly a friend so I thought that I could trust her.

Well I already had decided I wouldn't work for her again, but this just sealed the deal. She sounded upset about it, but she still was like there's nothing I can do..grr...

Sadly Namo no, we are both working our way through college (which explains why I haven't gotten up to NYC to meet some of you guys at a picnic or something) and we are pretty strapped for cash, plus we are saving to buy a house after graduation and saving money fora new place because where we live sucks. I am just going to talk to my boss today, tell her that I am going on my vacation and if she fires me that I will file for unemployment because she will be firing me for unjust cases. She can't fire me anyways because she needs staff desperatly. I just need this vacation and I will take it. What will she do if I don't show? Exactly...nothing. The week she wants me to stay is the last week of the program then the job is over.
