TRENTON, N.J. Which is more harmful to your health a smoky bar or a city street filled with diesel truck fumes? Well, you might want to skip your next happy hour. Smoky bars and casinos have up to 50 times more cancer-causing particles in the air than highways and city streets clogged with diesel trucks at rush hour, according to a study that also shows indoor air pollution virtually disappears once smoking is banned. Conducted by the researcher who first showed secondhand smoke causes thousands of U.S. lung cancer deaths each year, the study found casino and bar workers are exposed to particulate pollution at far greater levels than the government allows outdoors.

Posted: 10/26/04 at 1:21pmThe newest study also says that "social smoking" is now much more harmful than previously thought. I used to be a social smoker when I drank, but fortunately stopped long ago.

Non-smoker: "You know, second hand smoke is more harmful to the people around you than it is to yourself."
Smoker: "Well, I guess I made the right choice then."

Ah, yes. That's the only thing I miss about living in California.
The newest buffet at the Mirage in Las Vegas which is called "Cravings" is 100% smoke free. This is a very good thing becasue at many of the other restaurants in Vegas you have to wait much longer for non-smoking which is bull****.
Another thing that pisses me off is how much money the Federal goverment spends a year subsidizing tobacco famers. Basically, tobacco is a pain in the ass to grow. If you don't get the perfect amount of rain throughout the growing season, then your crop is screwed. But, not to worry the government will pay you. Also many tobacco farmers won't/can't grow anything else because the only thing they could make more money per acre growing is pot.

The city I live in (Kingston) went smoke free a few years ago. It's awesome being a vocalist here becuase you don't have to worry about all that crap getting into your lungs.
The Greater Toronto Area just went smoke free a few months ago, Toronto included. It's wonderful.....for us non-smokers, anyway.

The ONLY thing I like about it (and this from a reformed smoker...well...reformed for just over two months...we'll see how long it lasts), is that my clothes don't get all stinky!
Otherwise, NYC bars without the smoke is like a cocaine high without the gnashing of teeth.
It's JUST NOT THE SAME!!!

Posted: 10/26/04 at 3:15pmWhen the Vegas casinos go smoke-free, it will be the end of the world as we know it.

Posted: 10/26/04 at 3:15pmExcept now that people can only smoke outside, and the sidewalks here are so crowded, you're still breathing in your neighbor's smoke all the time.

robbiej congrats! good luck it is a tough habit to break.
As for me I never smoked. I saw what it did to my parents.
judy when did that law go in to effect? We vacationed in Ontario this summer (August) I don't recall being asked for a preference in seating at resturants.

As far as stinky clothes, whenever I go to my friends house to pay poker, when I get home I take off EVERYTHING and seal it in a plastic bag until laundry day.

Posted: 10/26/04 at 3:22pmhappily all bars here in LA are smoke free. You will find that the ones with outside areas for the smokers don't do good buisness.

Mom, what part of Ontario were you in? It's only the GTA, Kingston and Ottawa that are currently smoke free I believe.
Toronto just went in the past few months, perhaps in August, I can't quite remember. If you weren't asked for a preference in seating- does that mean it was all smoke free where you were? Because they made laws YEARS ago stating that smoking areas had to be sectionalized, and a few years ago they even had to be in a sepearte room.

We were in Toronto (what a wonderful zoo!) and Niagra Falls. It must have been all smoke free, because in N.F. we were seated near the bar and smoke bothers the heck out of me. Thanks for the info!

Red Robin around here has gone smoke free, they might as well advertise they have leprosy while they're at it. The place is a morgue.
I don't even smoke but I tend to sit in smoking sections because they have less kids. It's a risk I'm willing to take to have a peaceful meal, free of screaming children.
