yes, the article I read states that they have had a minor exposure to the outside world.

I watched an interesting interview with an expert on isolated tribal societies and she reminded the interviewer that contact must be made carefully as these people might be seeing other humans for the first time (other than themselves, of course) and have no knowledge of technology.
A group of 5 missionaries were murdered by the The Auca Indians in Ecuador. It's a fascinating story:
Jim Elliott, along with 4 other missionaries, wanted to make contact wuth the tribe but made a fatal mistake, though he didn't realise it. A young woman, who had escaped from the Auca tribe as a teenage girl several years before, had come in contact with Jim Elliot. She had helped him with collecting Auca phrases, and had answered most of the questions he had asked her.
They had taken a photograph of the escaped girl, known as Dayuma. Hoping it would lead to a bridge of friendship with the Aucas, they took the picture out of their pocket and showed it to the Aucas. The uncultured Indians were astonished. They didn't wear clothes, so therefore didn't know the meaning of pockets. They thought that they were taking Dayuma out of their bodies. But how did she get in there, and why was she so flat and short? The only decision the Aucas could come to was that the men had eaten her. They were cannibals, and therefore must be killed. And so they were.
The following Sunday, on January 8, Nate Saint flew his aeroplane over the Auca village to try and see why the Aucas weren't coming to visit. When he finally saw a "commission of 10" making their way over, he quickly contacted his wife, Marj, telling her to stand by the radio at 4:30 that afternoon. They expected that the Aucas were coming for another visit, and today was the day they would be reached. They were right.
When Marj turned her radio on that afternoon, she heard only crackled silence. The next day, when she learned that none of the other wives had heard from their husbands since the morning before, she quickly contacted MAF. Soon, the news of "5 men missing in Auca territory" was broken in headlines across the world. Several Christian men in the form of a search party were sent to the jungles where the 5 men had set up their tree house. The first sight that met them was Nate Saint's aeroplane, completely stripped of its material. For days, the search party searched for the men. After a week, they found all 5 bodies of the missionaries in the bottom of the river. A spear was found thrust into the body of one of the men, and another spear was found near the body of Jim Elliot.

There is a really great book called "Keep the River on Your Right" by an amazing guy Tobias Schneebaum (and a documentary) about his time with the Harakambut band in Peru. Basically he went to Peru (from the LES in NYC) in the 50s on a Fulbright. He painted for a while in Cuzco and one day went into the jungle and stayed with these people. Tobias was gay and the book goes into great detail about his sexual experiences in the band. He left shortly after he witnessed the sacking of a village. Check it out, it's an amazing story.
Yikes to the "uncultured Indians" in that article.

The scary thing about this entire episode is how condescending and idiotic some of the reports on it were. Newspapers carrying it reported on the photos in a sort of "Oh, look, how cute of them with their little bows and arrows, how primitive. They've missed the World Cup of 1966, and the Internet, and Gangland Murders..." way.
A British rag-loid actually wrote that.
