BFB, this is wonderful... in theory.
I'm a little concerned that:
1. This popped up so quickly, and is asking for money right away.
2. the actual header links back to the Gay & Lesbian Center are all bogus.
What's up?
Can we validate this organization first, before we're scammed?
Just a suggestion... especially since their site isn't exactly supporting their "umbrella organization" status is legit.

I just went directly to the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center's site and they DO have a link going the other way that works... so it's legit.
I just get wary of pop-up non-profits asking me for my credit card number before I even have to scroll down.
Knee-jerk reaction. Sorry!

Excellent call!
I AM admittedly a little trigger happy right now.
I got the website listening to a SoCal Progressive radio station online.
http://www.kpfk.org/
I used to work for them YEARS ago, so I take it for granted that that they are legit concerning GLBT issues.
I'm going to call the Gay and Lesbian Center and.. if they are still open.. perhaps they can confirm if this is legit.
hold on.

You beat me to it!
Phew! *wipes forehead*
For a second there, I thought I had dangerously jumped the gun.
So.. back to business..
EVERYONE!! Roll up your selves, check out the website, get into action.. and never Never NEVER GIVE UP!

re: INVALIDATEPROP8.ORG#5
Posted: 11/6/08 at 9:37pmSo it looks legit, but they don't really tell you exactly how your donation is being used. I'd like to have it verified that my donation is specifically going to a legal fund and not just to the general LA Gay & Lesbian Center coffers.

Again an EXCELLENT question...
I'm going to call... them.
Fade OUT...
re: INVALIDATEPROP8.ORG#8

Fade IN...
Ok.. I just called them but they are closed for the day... it must be nearly 7:00pm out there.
My morning tomorrow will be packed.
I will call in the afternoon, unless someone here is willing to beat me to it and confirm that the money contributed for fighting prop 8 will ONLY be spent on fighting prop 8.
The L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center is a pretty up and up organization, so I'm not worried. But clarity in these matters is important.
So I'll call tomorrow and confirm. But feel free to call before I do and post what you find.

This could end up in the US Supreme Court:

Bottom line: it's a legal MESS.

some "cross-threading"
Here is information from PalJoey's thread on reporting the Mormons and the IRS.
Subject: Take Action Against LDS
If it upsets you that a church can meddle with another state's political statutes, here's something simple you can do:
To report the LDS Church to the IRS, simply take 5 minutes to print these articles out and any others you can find:
http://www.sltrib.com/ci_10839546
http://www.sltrib.com/news/ci_10842051
Then print, sign and send the attached form (already completed) or download a blank and fill it out yourself at
http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f3949a.pdf
List the taxpayer as:
Thomas S. Monson, et al
50 East North Temple
Salt Lake City, Utah 84150
List his occupation as President and the business as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Check the boxes for False Exemption and Public/Political Corruption.
Then in the Comments section demand that the LDS Church be fined and their tax-exempt status revoked for repeated and blatant violations of the IRS's separate of church and state rules, and for conspiring to interfere with a state's political process.
Check Yes under "Are books/records available?" and write in "campaign finance records."
You don't have to provide any of your own personal info. Mail the form and the printed articles to:
Internal Revenue Service
Fresno, CA 93888

God bless BFB and PJ!
Thanks for jumping in so quickly on ideas and solutions. Yes, we need to verify legitimacy (because there are a lot of scams and cyberfreaks out there), but I understand the "trigger happy" thing.
Can't blame you a bit for diving in. It's important.

Well, now that we Gen X-ers got one of our own into the White House, we need that old school radical training.
I'll get my complaint sent out tomorrow.

I did my part today. I'm still confounded by why PJ's thread on the LDS was deleted, but I've given up trying to understand what passes and what doesn't around here.
On Facebook there's a movement for a Gay Secession Day. I like it in theory, but I don't know how I feel about tying it to Martin Luther King Day. Has anyone else heard about this?
re: INVALIDATEPROP8.ORG#19
Posted: 11/7/08 at 1:59pmWouldn't it make more sense to wait until our national GBLT organizations get together to map a strategy? HRC amonst others will be drafting an action plan to best decide what way to handle this.

There are already 3 challenges in the state of Cali. If I'm not mistaken, donating to this org goes to that fight?
That fight could overturn Prop 8 and/or head to the US Supreme Court, which is exactly what needs to happen to grant us Federal equal civil marriage rights and end this nonsense once and for all.
The HRC? Um.

Have any of you been calling the haters in the other thread?
There's something you can do, just push *67 before you dial the number and your number will be blocked from them.

Ok.. I spoke with the Gay and Lesbian Center in L.A.
If you make a donation at INVALIDATEPROP8.ORG your money will be used ONLY for the legal fight to invalidate Prop 8 and grass-root efforts to support marriage equality.
It turns out INVALIDATEPROP8.ORG is not part of the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center. So your money won't go to the Center's "general" fund.
The two organizations are simply working with each other.
I imagine most people haven't heard of this website so I encourage everyone of you to pass this information forward to at least five people concerned with the marriage equality fight.
And ask those five people to pass it on as well.
