In a matter of hours it will have been exactly one year since the Virginia Tech massacre. When the tragedy occurred, I was a freshman at Westfield High School, which is the school that two of the victims- Erin Peterson and Reema Samaha- graduated from, as well as the shooter. That day, and the ensuing school week, was the saddest and most surreal experience of my life. Although I was only involved in the most indirect way, it still evokes strong emotions whenever I think of it, which is often. The one good thing that seemed to come out of this was a sense of unity: At my school, at Tech, and in schools and towns and states across the country. Tomorrow, as we go about our normal days, it would be nice if we could just take a moment to remember the 32 lives lost. Thanks for reading, and sorry for the long post.
Definitely. I graduated from Virginia Tech in December, and I can honestly say that that day last year was one of the hardest of my life. Any time there's a loss of life of that magnitude, it's horrible, but so unexpected a tragedy in a place where, if anywhere, people should be safe....is just unthinkable. My heart is still broken for the families and friends of the people who were killed. I grieve, but I'm also so proud to be part of such a resilient community and touched by the outpouring of support we received from people everywhere.
I'll be heading to Blacksburg tomorrow to participate in the memorial events. Hopefully, everyone can take a little time out to remember the fallen students and teachers, my fellow Hokies.
The first anniversary of a loss is always difficult. My thoughts are with all those who will be marking this sad event.
Wow. I can't believe it's been a year. That was such a huge tragedy, and I'm sure lots of people will bear the emotional scars for a long, long time...
My God, I can't believe it's been a year, either! My thoughts out for everyone.
