Worth Repeating...
"Imagine if the audience's appetite for outrage extended to the dying of American democracy. Imagine if media bosses believed that we're insatiable for information about the Republican attempt to rig the '08 election by politicizing the Justice Department and prosecuting phony voter fraud. Imagine if the same kind of blanket coverage that's currently conferred on loopy astronauts, bratty rehaboholics, and, yes, outrageously slandered basketball teams, were afforded instead to the slow-motion fascism now on the move in America. Would we watch it the same Pavlovian way we watch tits, twits and tornadoes?"
The art of distraction is alive and well.
"Four U.S. soldiers were killed on Monday and April is on course to be one of the deadliest for troops in many months as more American and Iraqi forces deploy under a new security plan."
"The latest deaths bring to around 45 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq this month, half of them in the Baghdad area alone."
Pairs Hilton to Play Anna Nicole in Film Produced by Don Imus
i wonder how much they paid imus to do this to distract from the war like this? it had to be a lot for him to possibly f*ck his career. i demand investigations. i see rove's pudgy little fingerprints all over this.
and again, i demand that you people who are upset over this imus thing apologize to the world for your callousness and return to your seats in the corners and think about what you've done, especially those nappy headed ho's up at rutgers. don't they know there's a f*cking war on????
Okay so Eli at firedoglake explains how this DOES affect the ability of Limbaugh/Coulter/Savage/Beck to make "racist, misogynist, homophobic, and eliminationist" remarks on air.
MSNBC's firing of Imus draws a line in the sand and says "This is no longer acceptable. It was EASIER for MSNBC to do this to Imus because he DOESN'T have the support of the conservative establishment--but it puts the conservative asshOles on notice that they are being watched too.

don't fall for that doubletalk, pj, it's a rovian plot.
Imus is just an old guy who gets his vocabulary from a rap dictionary.
No, it can't be a Rovian plot anymore. He's been neutralized.
oh no, unless he's dead, he can never be completely counted out.
At least this will erode what was left of Howard Fineman's credibility.
>> I really don't understand what your point is. You admit what Imus said is wrong. But you're somehow using rap lyrics to excuse it. They're BOTH wrong. And if you feel so strongly about rap/hip hop lyrics what don't YOU do something about it? And it would probably be an interesting discussion to talk about why those lyrics don't get the media attention you think they deserve.
What Imus said was not only racist AND sexist but a personal attack on a group of women who did nothing to deserve. A group of women who should be considered role models for young girls everywhere.
Oh pease. If you cant see the point, then there's frankly no hope. Imus said some ill-chosen words, and the media and "leaders" have been hanging him high, practically demanding his head on a pike.
Where is that self-righteous anger when someone like Snoop Dogg does it? You say it's just as wrong, but where's the action to back that up? Where's the protests? Where's Al Sharpton holding them accountable? Where's the advertisers pulling off the MTV Music Awards because of that program's blatant sexist attitudes? Where's the president of _________ Records going on the air and apologizing for the way women are portrayed in his company's promotional music videos? Out taking another one of those smoke breaks, I guess, huh.
Oh right, MTV can do it. Imus cant. Imus is just a dirty old man with a foul mouth. MTV is full of young, hip people who can refer to women as bitches and "ho's" in songs that win Academy Award nominations. Do I have it right now?
Nope, nothin' hypocritical about any of that, is there...
Sean..
Mtv has NOTHING to do with it! They shouldn't be able to do it either. And just because they get away with it without a storm of media controversy doesn't make it ok. And it doesn't excuse what Imus did. Your arguement is the same as the "but Clinton" argument certain posters who support the Bush administration on here make. And it makes no sense.
>> Mtv has NOTHING to do with it! They shouldn't be able to do it either.
BUT THEY DO. YEAR AFTER YEAR AFTER YEAR, and NO ONE says squat about it. And if you bother to read, I'm not excusing Imus -- I'm just saying that there's a whole lot of hypocricy goin' on when Imus gets the shaft and everyone else gets the "Go Free" card.
You think it makes no sense? I'm calling that denial. You KNOW it's the same thing, and you wont accept it. The only reason Imus gets whacked and MTV doesnt is because Imus is disposable. He's old. He's at the end of his career. No one would DARE pull MTV off the cable airwaves over something like this because there's too much money at stake -- and THAT, my friend, is what it ultimately comes down to. We'll call his words "racist and sexist", but when some video does the same thing, it's suddenly "art" and "freedom of expression" and an Academy Award nominee.
Right...
Once more, for the reading impaired, I'm not excusing Imus for what he said. It was wrong. But the national reaction to it has been so over the top that what he said now pales in comparison. And we'll all pretend that there's no hypocricy about it all because it's easier that way, wont we.

You're so right. It pisses me off when MTV videos take the Academy Awards year after year.
after discovering that life is not always fair, sean went on a three day crying jag that left his cheeks sorely cramped.
Well, if Sean's finally gone, can I jack this thread to the REAL enemies: LimbaughCoulterSavageBeck!
Not to mention CheneyBush!
Prattle on, pathetic losers. But dont go whining the next time someone makes a racist remark and you have no one but yourselves to blame for sustaining an environment that reinforces it.
"Prattle on, pathetic losers."
well, that certainly just negated any respect I had for your talent in writing, design, etc.
I hope everyone realizes the true reason Imus was pulled off the air, the allmighty dollar. His advertisers pulled out and thats why he was fired. He would have been brought back after his suspension. It all comes down to the buck in the end and nothing else. That's what motivated Sharpton to attack and thats why MSNBC fired him.
but, i think it's progress of a kind that advertisers felt that being associated with such comments would be harmful enough to their products that they felt compelled to pull their advertising.
Step forward, step back. Sponsors have always had these semi knee jerk reactions when it comes to situations like this.
eh, one less old white guy on the air is a bad thing how?
oh I'm no Imus fan, and I don't find him funny so I can't argue there
The inherent difference, Sean, between Imus's remark and some equally distasteful song on mTV, is intent. Imus made his remark about specific individuals.
There is also an extra whallop packed when the person casually tossing off such degrading and dismissive comments is a person who is part of the "power" demographic...middle-aged white men.
