Well, Lunesta does wonders for me - but if you're not looking to get a perscription, I recommend two Unisom and a bunch of Melatonin. You'll be out cold.
As an on/off insomniac with an aversion to medication, this is what I've come across. One tip is don't stay in bed tossing and turning. If you lie down, and after about 20-30 minutes haven't fallen asleep, get up and do something for a while until you feel tired, and then get back in bed. Try a warm bath.
Also -- don't read, write, watch TV or anything like that while in bed. Condition your body to think of the bed for sleep and nothing else.
And you're a writer. I often find myself mapping out story ideas in my head, and that seems to empty up my mind enough to fall asleep quickly.

We don't have a TV in a our bedroom, so none of that, and Ivan must have it pitch dark, so no reading or writing in bed.
And I am a writer, and while I do think of stories in my head, it just seems to wake me up even more, causing me to want to write.
Last time this happened, I took some Nyquil, but I think I got addicted, so I quit.
Addicted to NyQuil? Is that possible?
I stand by my suggestion. Atleast try the Melatonin. It's not harmful, it's not addictive, and it's a vitamin. It works well.

Not addicted, per se, but after a while I couldn't sleep without taking a shot.
