Irony

I like the work of Greenpeace, and applaud their efforts.

I just found this a little ironic.

"Greenpeace said Tuesday it will pay nearly $7,000 in damages after the environmental group's flagship, the Rainbow Warrior II, hit a coral reef at a world heritage site in the southern Philippines.

The accident Monday was "very regrettable," Greenpeace said in a joint statement with the Tubbataha National Marine Park, but it laid some of the blame on maritime charts showing its ship was 1.5 miles from the reef."

Any other good examples of irony out there?

re: Irony

It's ironic that Alanis Morissette's song "Ironic" contains virtually no examples of anything that is actually ironic.

OK, I don't get the Karl Rove/pumpkin pie one.

Is it a comparison to Alger Hiss? re: Irony

eta: Duh. I should have been looking at the brand, not the product itself.

That Alanis thing is wrong....

"Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly...but packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye.
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight, and as the plane crashed down he though, 'well isn't this nice..."

That situation seems ironic.

At first I thought the Rove reference was to his physique.

But Libby's Libby' Libby's is on the label label label.

re: Irony

That's why I said "virtually no examples" instead of "absolutely no examples." That's the only actual example of irony in the song.

re: Irony

Yeah, Alanis Morissette seems to be confusing "ironic" with "just plain sucky."

"Rain on your wedding day" could be ironic if you lived someplace where it rained all the time, and you wanted an outdoor wedding, so you went someplace where it barely EVER rained, and then the day of your wedding it rained there and not back at your home. XD

Or the 98-year-old man who won the lottery and then died? Yup, what a strange twist -- for a 98-year-old man to die.
