MTS EXCLUSIVE : Glenn Beck uses anti-gay slur "f*ggot" on show, unbleeped
On tonight's Glenn Beck show on Headline News, he said the word "f*ggot" unbleeped.
The same word was bleeped on Headline News earlier in the day, when said at the Golden Globes by Isaiah Washington.
UPDATE: http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0701/22/gb.01.html
BECK: I`m down to this cr*ppy show. But anyway, Dave, what is the -- what is the controversy? One of the guys called another guy a naughty name.
GLOVER: Yes. Basically you have Isaiah Washington, who's one of the stars of the show, who referred to one of his co-stars during a heated argument as a derogatory term for a gay man that starts with "F", rhymes with maggot. Did it a couple more times after that. And do you like how I did that?
BECK: Yes.
GLOVER: And...
BECK: Do you know that "The New York Times" wouldn't even print -- I mean, we can say the word. We're having an adult conversation here. Wouldn't even print the word "f*ggot."
GLOVER: Right.
BECK: Wouldn't print it. I find that amazing.
Let CNN Know Your Opinion...

he's shcoked that the NYT wouldn't print it? Would the NYT print the word N**ger?
ETA why am I even responding to this? Glenn Beck is a raging moron.

But my opinion is that he said the word in the context of a discussion, if that transcript is accurate. I mean, I'm no Glenn Beck fan, but seriously. Enough is enough with this incident as a topic.
Hear, hear!
but his shock at the NYT not printing it shows what a dip**** he is.
ETA I have no problem with his use of the word because of its context. They were conversing about the word F*ggot. It's hard to talk about it without saying it. I feel the same way about N**ger. IF in the context of a conversation about the word, and its affects on the world and its appropriateness and whatnot, then its fine.
but then again, i'm just a little pale fag boy, so what do i know about the N word.

I not complaining about the use of the word in the context of the conversation...simply the description of the word as a "naughty name."
Just little ole me's opinion...ya know, the fella that got physically assaulted several years ago by three teenagers who called me a "naughty name."
But then again, if you're tired of the topic being discussed, well then...DON'T READ THE MESSAGES!
Liverpool, if you think it is fine to use the words in the context of discussing them (I think it's fine to use any word in that context), then why do you keep using asterisks, when typing them?

I didn't mean to set you off and I am truly sorry for anyone who has ever been assaulted for any reason and while I defer to you on that, (which was your point, I would guess), when will the topic of the Grey's Anatomy thing and all of the tributary f-word discussions die out already? So, let's say CNN gets an avalanche of angry emails and they're passed on to genius Glenn Beck who then gets even MORE mileage out of the issue and goes on the angry white guy "now they're trying to step on MY freedom of speech" entitlement rant which then empowers even more angry white men to use the word, at THAT point will somebody be allowed to say that we've reached the point of diminishing returns or will assault survival always trump critical tactical thinking and discussion of same?
john, because the websites vulgarity blocks out faggot and n*.
ETA. Or not. well i'll be damned. you learn something everyday.

Everyone just stop raising a ruckus; it's noisy enough at the back of the bus.

In the late 1970's, there was a popular Off-Broadway musical called "The Faggot". I'm assuming the New York Times printed the ttitle.
Last night, on "STUDIO 60", the "n-word" was used, by one African-American to another. Maybe they got away with it because he pronounced it with the "...ah" ending instead of the "...er"
Namo is right.
Beck is an ass.
if you faggots can't get along back there, i swear i will turn this message board right around and nobody'll get any ice cream! don't think i won't!

Well, WCA, I admire your restraint in not making a Hitler analogy. Yet.

Didn't Larry Kramer write a book entitled.. Or this a domain word?
Amazon.com's "Search Inside" banner is NOT actually part of the cover design, but it makes me giggle.
Speaking of searching inside, an old queen (can I say that?) I once knew, long since deceased, told me that the REAL hidden meaning of Hello Dolly's "I Put My Hand in There" was that it was Jerry Herman's ode...to fisting!
When I use my fist a little
Some young bride gets kissed a little
Pressure with the thumbs
Matrimony comes
When, I put my hand in there!
For when my little pinky wiggles
Some young maiden gets the giggles
Then I make my knuckles active
"My" he says "She's so attractive."
Then I move my index digit
And they both begin to fidget
Then I clench my palm
The preacher reads a psalm
When I put my hand in there!

Red hankies all around! Talk about naughty!
"Hey, Isaiah Washington, next time you wanna spew some antigay rhetoric, call Rupert Everett.
The openly gay actor says he doesn't mind derogatory names thrown his way. "I like being called faggot, queer. Everyone's got phobias, even gays for straights," he told Planet Gossip's Matt Donnelly during a reading of Everett's memoir, Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins, at West Hollywood's Book Soup bookstore.
How does Everett justify verbal gay bashing? "I'd rather be called a faggot by someone who felt it—then you know where they stand," he said. "It's so much better to say what you feel.""

Even verbal assaults?

No, actually, I only use the word "assault" when referring to physical assaults. I also find use of the word "bashing" to describe a verbal tussle to be belittling of actual survivors of physical assault. But that's the trend in language in a culture that has to assure that everybody "feels emotionally comfortable" even if there are people who are starving and medically uninsured. Emotions trump COLD HARD REALITY.
My best to Sally Struthers.
I agree with Namo...it all just sounds so utterly preschool when we discuss homophobia and racism and--when using the words as objective concepts--we have to say "the N word" or "the F word." It's childish.
Why not come up with kindergarten words for them, like "Noonies" and "Foo-Foos?"
...the same way little kids talk about their private parts.
That ought to bring these discussions to a higher level of understanding.
oh, please, b12b, you just want to have a nooner with a foo-foo.
