or something....
Hey guys. I just got a call from the hospital that I interviewed with and they said they would like to hire me, but one of my references (the job I was fired at) said a couple of not nice things about me (which is bogus) so the manager told met that he had to go to bat for me and that I really need to prove myself on the first day that it was worth it. I am going to do the best job I could do regardless, but all this added pressure is not helping.

I'm sure you'll do great, DJ! Just do your absolute best, which I'm sure you would regardless of whether or not they had told you to. It'll be fine!
never burn bridges DJ.
Good luck and congrats.
ps-why did you give your old manager as a reference?
Best of luck, DJ - don't put too much pressure on yourself. You said the ex-manager's report was bogus, so what've you got to worry about. You'll be swell.
Taz, I was wondering the same thing, but you do have to put down your employment history and it's really not a good idea to omit jobs for any reason.
It was mandatory that I put where I worked and who the manager was. I guess they called all the places that I put down that I worked and that asshole must have went off. The manager of the hospital said, "Did you know that you were not up for re-hire?" I said, "The only thing I know is what the unemployment agency told me about that there was not enough business to keep as many employees as he had." What a bastard. I should have gone to the better business bureau (sp) and reported his ass for verbal abuse (cussing us out in front of patients) among other things. But me and my nice self decided not to. Asshole!
I mean, I am glad I got the job, but that is probably why it has taken me SO long to find a job. I thought S.C. law was that they can only say the dates that I worked and was not allowed to go into details. Guess I was wrong.
FYI - previous places of employment may only verify that you actually worked at a job for the dates you said you did. Even if asked for an opinion it is illegal for them to give one, good or bad.
The only people who may give an opinion of you are the references you provide.
They broke the law and the department of labor should be notified.
even if it is on an application where you have to put the phone number and such?
absolutely. You listed them a previous employer, not a reference.
Can you imagine if old employers were allowed to give opinions about previous employees? No one would have a job!
DJ - call a lawyer. You may have a case. A winnable case.
For shizzle.
It is absolutely, heinously not okay for a past employer to divulge ANYTHING but dates. Hang those bitches.
who is shizzle and why is your post only for her?
Jaily, I believe the proper terminology is Fo'.
Totally, dj. Employers can not make any comment about you, by law.
Of course, no one will argue when an employer says something good about you ... so when hiring, it's usually a flag when the employer only provides dates of employment and salary. But never can an employer say something bad about you.
It's a rule in our office that we can only provide salary and length of employment information, even if it's positive.
Hmmmm . . . I can't afford a lawyer but I will call the department of labor and let them know. I am just mad that they have been telling people this because I am thinking that is the main reason I have not been hired by the 50+ jobs I have applied to in the last few months.
I'M HERE, DON'T PANIC!
