I love every single song in it, but I find the movie slow. I do think it would make a much better live musical.
Santa Fe and the opening song are both fantastic.
Some of Menken's best work I think.

I'm interjecting myself into conversation:
2 years ago, I assistant directed a youth production of Newsies. Obviously not an official release, but licensed in some way. Anyway, it worked INCREDIBLY well. I'd love to see it on stage, well done. It could be really, really thrilling.

And JG2 - that's interesting. You say it was "licensed in some way" - what does that mean? I would think if a stage version were (legally) available, we would have seen or heard about productions. Was this a school venture of some kind?

Honestly, scott, it's a lot of work. They've probably gotten started and gave up.
DG, I don't know all the details...I was pulled in a couple of weeks after rehearsals started. It WAS legal, I know that, but I believe it was a specific youth version. There may be some hoops to jump through to get it, I'm not entirely sure. I should ask about that, though...I'm curious as well.
