I was talking to an acquaintance today about how the First Amendment should not be used to justify the hate behind Chik-Fil-A. I brought up how just in the 1960's, interracial couples were not allowed to legally marry, but if a restaurant tried to say that today, they would probably across-the-board be considered racist.
That got me thinking: prejudice of a race is racism; prejudice of a sex is sexism, and so on. Is there a word for just for prejudice and hatred toward gay individuals?
"Bigot" covers a lot of prejudicial thinking. I don't necessarily like "homophobic" for everything, since not every example of this hatred comes from a fearful place.
I apologize if there is a word and I'm ignorant to it. Growing up a Christian straight girl in the middle of Georgia (near where Dan Cathy grew up), life did not expose me early to the fight for gay rights.
Actually, I disagree. I think all bigotry is rooted in fear of difference.
But to answer your question, I've seen "heterosexist" used in place of "homophobic".
Here is the Urban dictionary on the word:

I remember some blog (maybe it was Pam's House Blend) recommended homobigot.
I'd go for that, Phyllis, but I don't think it's clear whether a "homobigot" is a bigoted homosexual or a bigot against homosexuals.
Actually, I have the same problem with "heterosexist". At first glance it isn't clear whether the person described is heterosexual or opposed to heterosexuals.
hetersexist is very clinical. If someone called me that I might think they thought I was having a sex change.
It reminds me of Eminem's "Criminal."
