Loved him in Support Your Local Gunfighter & Support Your Local Sheriff, but I think my favorite was his appearance in The Notebook. ![]()
James Garner of ‘Maverick,’ ‘Rockford Files’ Dies at 86
A sad day indeed
R.I.P. Bret Maverick
Very sad news to wake up to this morning.
James Garner was a frequent co-star of Julie Andrews and they made three films together: THE AMERICANIZATION OF EMILY, VICTOR/VICTORIA, and ONE SPECIAL NIGHT. My favorite is "Victor/Victoria" but both Garner and Andrews have gone on record that Chaefsky's "Emily" was their favorite film of their respective careers. The sentimental sap in me loves THE NOTEBOOK, but I've always liked THE CHILDREN'S HOUR, too. He was always a welcome presence in movies.
May he rest in peace.
Just read a quote of his when asked to do a nude scene
"I don't do horror movies"
Classic line.
Americanization of Emily is certainly up there for me too as his best work.
OK I loved the Maverick TV series too but that was just funnin. Emily is great as a love and political story w great performances & writing.

One of the few, very few, actors that you never heard a bad word about ever.

The Rockford Files was my first contact with him. Such a great actor, such a down to earth person. The theme music still takes me back to the 70s.

On TCM July 28 th a marathon of 18 James Garner movies.
He and Julie Andrews made a very cute and loving couple on screen, especially in Victor/Victoria. May he rest in peace.
