Why is she in Pirate Radio? The role she plays could have been done by an up and coming actress that needed the work. You can't consider the role a cameo like Emma Thompson's role. She certainly won't win an Oscar like Judi Dench did for 8 minutes of screen time.
The only reason I can think of why she did it was because she must have interested Richard Curtis during Love Actually and did this movie as a favor to him. Or maybe she needed the extra income to pay her tax bill from Mad Men. But she adds nothing to the film and if you're out to the bathroom, you may miss her scene.
She should be ashamed for stealing a role from an actress that could have used the work.
Because if January Jones had declined the role it would have immediately gone to some up-and-comer? If you want to blame someone for a missed opportunity, blame the director.
i wouldn't even know who she is had she not hosted SNL last week.

Was some of her stuff cut? I know that in England Pirate Radio flopped under the title The Boat that Rocked, and was 20 minutes longer so maybe she was part of the chopped bit?
*edit* according to Wiki it was originally even longer:
Cutting room floor
With an initial running time coming in around three hours, many scenes were removed as the editing progressed solely for reasons of time. These include a sub-plot about a rival pirate broadcaster being sabotaged by the Radio Rock crew (featuring James Corden) and a flashback to Gavin's past explaining his return to the ship. Felicity also has a scene explaining her joining the crew to escape her fiancee and we learn more about Angus's reasons for believing the crew not liking him. All of these scenes have been included on most home video releases as deleted scenes introduced by Richard Curtis

Abba, I still don't know who she is, because I never stay awake for SNL.
An actress taking a role in a film is now considered a thief.
Alrighty then.
This is the stupidest comment of the week.
Richard Curtis is a thief too for not letting a younger and more emergent director make this movie.
If you go to the bathroom you might miss the entire period the film is in theaters b/c it's going to come and go so quickly!
Scandalous!
After my initial headdesk at Gothampc -I'm posting my opinion. Gothampc? January Jones - whether you like her or not - is not an a-lister. She's not stealing any roles from anyone. Until Mad Men - she was most known for her role in American Wedding. One of the American Pie movies. Seriously. Because she's on a hit show that still MANY people don't want or know who she is, you think she just handpicks what roles she wants and "makes a call" to get them? And do you think she honestly expects Academy recognition for the role?
"But she adds nothing to the film and if you're out to the bathroom, you may miss her scene"
Right - so if it went to some "struggling" actress - the role would have been better and/or helped launch her career? Oh please.
I guess it was a slow obamanewsday for you....
ETA: p.s. It took 2 full minutes to write this reply. You're a thief for taking that time away from me... (eyeroll)
I try to be very careful to not resort to invective when voicing my dissenting opinions.
But this post was so--what's the word? Oh, stupid.

While I never really agree with Goth's thoughts, I generally at least have some idea of what has motivated them.
I honestly don't get this at all. Is Ms. Jones famous for espousing liberal thoughts? That's the only thing I can think of that would cause this nonsensical post.

She may be a thief but she sure is pretty.
I wouldn't call her a thief...but she did steal an hour and a half of my time last Saturday night that I'll never see again.

YES MA'AM!!!!
I read goth's post right before I went to sleep last night...it didn't deserve a response then, and it still doesn't.

She was in my dream last night. I'm on Chantix, which has given me some truly bizzaro dreams. I'm not sure if she was Betty or January in the dream, but there was some other guy who was not Jon Hamm (who was also there) claiming to be Don Draper.
I can never remember that much detail about my dreams. I do remember having a dream the other night that I had an 8 month old baby who could talk like a regular person. And he had a face with regular features, not like baby features. It was weird.

I usually don't remember them at all, but since I've started taking Chantix, they are really really vivid. And they are usually about really mundane things so half the time these days I don't know what's real and what I dreamed.
Did he have a side kick dog named Brian?

Phyllis, you're on Chantix? I think I've seen one of those "If you've experienced homicidal thoughts and hit someone in the face with a bat while on this drug please call 1-800-messed-up at the Keller, Stillman, Guffman, Newman & Splenda lawfirm". Hmmmm.....
Is that a Family Guy reference SNAFU? I don't watch that show....

Lol. Every night they (they being a recording) call me to check in on me and make sure I'm not smoking. One night I listened on to the litany of side effects and I was sweating bullets because not only are they intense, but some of them just seem par for the course with me anyway!
Nothing is like the time I tried to quit smoking by taking Wellbutrin. That sh*t made me suicidal.
My doc had me on Zoloft and Wellbutrin at the same time. I don't think I experienced an emotion for a year.
