2006 Chicago Film Critics Awards Winners
Are you putting the negative spin on it or is that how it was annouced to the public? How did she FAIL, exactly?
...but Hudson has won:
Best Supporting Actress from the Broadcast Film Critics Association, Female Breakthrough Performance of the Year from the National Board of Review, Best Supporting Actress from the New York Film Critics Circle, Breakout Performance of the Year from the Phoenix Film Critic Society, Best Supporting Actress at the Satellite Awards, ShoWest Female Star of Tomorrow, Best Supporting Actress from the Southeastern Film Critics Association, Breakthrough Performance of the Year from the Washington D.C. Film Critics Association, Best Supporting Actress from the Washington D.C. Film Critics Association, Breakthrough Performance of the Year from the Oklahoma Film Critics Association, on top of a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress, as well as countless rave reviews.
Not too shaby, if I do say so myself.
Well she lost the award. She didn't win. So that's a failure on some level. Not that the Chicago Film Critics Awards mean that much, but it is of course entirely possible that DREAMGIRLS will run out of steam by the prime of Oscar season. There will of course be an inevitable backlash and then a backlash against the backlash - timing is EVERYTHING with the Oscars.
And the Best Supporting Actress Oscar race is always one of the most volatile. Lots of upsets happen in that catagory. Being an early front runner doesn't always pan out...

I agree MB, and I do not think anyone or anything is a lock at the Oscars. The film itself is very open to losing steam come the heat of the awards season, but Hudson?
I'm sorry, but I don't think anyone has every gotten the types of reviews she is getting and lost the award. Could she be upset? Yes. And could the voters not see in her what the critics and everyone else seems to have seen? For sure, but I think she is going to consistently remain the frontrunner.
She has a huge advantage in that she is in a role that many argue isn't Supporting. She has a meatty storyline and big moments that no one else going up against her will have. "And I Am Telling You.." alone should warrant the win (at least in my opinion.)
Her being upset would arguably be one of the biggest upsets to ever happen, but we'll see how it all pans out.
I think its too early to say that Hudson losing the Oscar would be one of the biggest upsets in Oscar history. We still have the SAG AWARDS and The GOLDEN GLOBES - if Hudson were to say, lose those, she wouldn't even be the frontrunner to win the Oscar.
Its really all too early to know anything. For all we know DREAMGIRLS could hit a major snub by the AMPAS and only get nominated for techs.
I meant solely based on the reviews, but you're right, if she obviously lost the two 'big' precursor awards, it wouldn't be an upset at all.

A diva is not without honour, save in her own country.
And its not quite fair to say that Hudson's reviews are the only fabulous mentions for a supporting actress conteder. Both ladies from BABEL, for example, have received tremendous notices: the film simply isn't as high profile as DREAMGIRLS.
And I still say watch out for Abagail Breslin (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE) - the Academy has a history of honoring little girls in that catagory. It could happen.
While certainly loved by the critics, the ladies of Babel are not getting the kind of career-defining notices Hudson is getting. I don't think anyone will argue that no one else in contention for the category is being as well reviewed has Hudson, and that has alot to do simply with the amount she has to do vs her opponents.
Several of the bigger publications that have reviewed her have explicitly said she has the Oscar all locked up. While that doesn't ensure anything, no one else is getting that written about them.
Breslin could be a threat, but she is losing buzz and has been left out of nominations for the last few rounds of critics awards. She'll need to get in at the Globes to even have a prayer of a nomination by the Academy.
Most are thinking the Oscar race will have Hudson, Blanchett, both Babel girls, and Catherine O'Hara. If Breslin gets in, it will be that fifth spot.
No negative spin. Not sure how to concisely put it in the subject.
"........Hudson losing the Oscar would be one of the biggest upsets in Oscar history."
Seriously... come on people. That has to be one of the most ridiculous comments I've heard in awhile. Maybe it would be an upset in your world, but not in Oscar history. This is her FIRST film and yes, while it is an incredible performanced, she is not the only person who gave an amazing performance this year.
Sylar, you are obviously mis-interpreting my comment.
I am not saying it would be a huge upset because of how great she is in the movie.
It would be a huge upset because of the reviews she is getting, the buzz she has, and all of the awards she is already getting this early in the season. If ANYONE in ANY film in ANY role had all those things going for them, losing the Oscar would be just as big an upset.
This isn't a Hudson-specific thing, and I'd appreciate it if you didn't belittle me and make it out to be such.
and PS..while I love her singing and "I'm Telling You.." is amazing, her acting overall is not all that stellar, especially up against Murphy, Foxx and Glover. And don't get me started on how Anika steals EVERY frame she's in. Even in still photos from the film she is so present, totally overshadowing Hudson and Knowles.
I think the nomination is well deserved and 'could be enough' for such a novice. This might hurt her chances closer to Oscar time when voters can ingest the other films out there, with screeners sent out, who knows who could emerge come February.
Oscar win or no, Hudson's performance in "Dreamgirls" has made her a star.
Singing, I disagree about Hudson's acting. I think she gives a subtle, nuanced performance when she is not singing that makes her vocal performance that much more powerful.
Who cares! She rocked the part of Effie and I loved her from beginning to end. If she doesn't win the Oscar . . . she is still a winner in mine and countless other people's eyes.
I just posted this on another thread, but it merits repeating here... and MY GOD THERE ARE SO MANY THREADS ON THIS.
I wish we could have a "do-over" and consolidate....

The Golden Globes are a TERRIBLE predictor of Oscar wins in the Supporting actor/actress categories. They are often WAY of the mark, with winners in their categories not even scoring an Academy nomination, let alone a parallel win.
The SAG awards, in contrast, have been a pretty good indicator, although they are still a relatively new award. Their track record for matching "Oscar" is MUCH better than the Globes. This makes sense when you think about it, because SAG actors make up the largest voting body of the "select" members in the Academy. Actors opinions count the most for all Oscars, in other words. That's just the way they're set up. (They also have FOUR separate acting awards, more than any other professional field, so that would be why.)
And the Chicago Film critics awards, as flattering and lovely as they are, mean NOTHING when it comes to matching the Academy Awards. Check out their history, and you'll see what I mean.

The Golden Globes is a terrible predictor of Oscars in ANY category. Richard Gere won the Golden Globe for Chicago but wasn't even nominated for the Oscars. The Golden Globes are not meant to predict the Oscars...
I agree, neddyfrank2.
We have to remember one thing... the Academy is made up of peers, not critics. The critics award "precursors," including the Globes count for next to nothing, as far as Oscar is concerned.
The Guild awards, on the other hand, are a fairly good indication... since most voting members in the Academy are a member of one or more of these guilds. So look to SAG, WGA, DGA, and the Producer's Guild to show what is "likely" to win... but even that's not a sure bet. Still it's a closer indication than whatever critics' group you can name.
In a recent interview, Ms. Hudson said that just being able to do the film was the greatest experience she'd ever been part of, and any additional awards were just icing on the cake. That's a beautiful way to look at this. If she wins, she wins. If she doesn't, she doesn't. Either way, she has quite a lot to be proud of.

We all have things that we have emotionally responded to, so it's absolutely understandable to really root for someone's achievement. For myself, after Judy was robbed after an ENTIRE CAREER'S worth of achievement, I just take things for what they are - a crapshoot.
Personally, I probably wouldn't vote for her, but I'm sure many will. Whether it's enough will be known when the envelope is opened.
And if you REALLY want to know how much it matters in the long run, go back and look at the list of those who have won that accolade through the years . . .

And please note who did NOT win in any particular year.
An easy to read list.
Whenever my mind boggles over Clint Eastwood having TWO best director statues and Martin Scorsese having none, I recall Best12Bar's information that most of the Academy are actors and I realize why.
I just don't see why it's called a failure. It's not like she sought out this award. How can you fail at something that is arbitrary to begin with?
