It is usually very easy to avoid speaking ill of the dead. In this case, there's nothing but ill to be said.

I just regret that the cause of death wasn't lung cancer.
May God damn his soul!

For a while today. Wikipedia was reporting that "Jesse Helm's body was discovered in a pool of his own urine." Andres Serrano must have smiled.
How apropos.

It makes me sad when you use the term "kicks the bucket."
It gives me unneeded sobbing.
For an opinionated man who spoke so much ill while he was alive, I have no trouble speaking ill of him on his death.
He was a blight on humanity.
And I would dance for joy if Fred Phellps picketed his funeral.
I just looked at the OT Board and saw these threads one right after the other:
Jesse Helms kicks the bucket
and
Bozo The Clown Has Died
You can imagine what was going through my mind!
That someone posted the same news story twice?
Bingo!

I have a friend who I turn to when I get really pessimistic about the state of the world, who consoles me with the statement, "Just remember, every day another old bigot dies."
I don't know why that's crossing my mind now.
As Bette Davis is reported to have said upon hearing the news of the death of Joan Crawford - "GOOD!"
I wish his family peace in their time of grief
To his credit, he was a fiscal conservative. I'll just leave it at that.

It scares me that he was able to keep getting re-elected in North Carolina by running racist campaigns against his Afro-American challengers. Also that the various news spots all praise him for "standing by his convictions", however "controversial" they were. That's rather akin to praising Attilla the Hun for being focused.
Anyone remember the last two lines of the Forbidden Broadway SPIDER WOMAN takeoff (substituting "Queer One" for "Dear One")?
"Keep on kissing me as our mothers cry,
And someday Jesse Helms will die."
Honestly, I thought he died years ago but still...what a wonderful birthday present for America. May he be the be-spangled centerpiece of that big Gay Pride parade in the sky.
