Together for 38 years and they still want to get married.
God bless them.
They should be congratulated just for sticking it out together for 38 years. Fantastic...now THAT'S LOVE!

By all accounts Jim Nabors was the nicest man in show business. He deserves only happiness.
Well, Gaaawwwleee!
Jim Nabors just made an "impossible dream" possible.

“...and I’m not ashamed of people knowing, it’s just that it was such a personal thing, I didn’t tell anybody,” Nabors he told the station...
It kind of annoys me that celebrities who come out feel they need to defend being in the closet to begin with. I want someone to say, "No, I didn't stay in the closet too long because I'm ashamed of what I am...I stayed there because I was so traumatized by the threat and fear I felt brought on by a people who insisted I was doing something shameful."
Artscallion--I couldn't agree more, but I think we need to alllow for the fact that we can't know what it was like for a man born in 1931 to have dealt with being gay. (I assume you are not in the 82 year-old range. If you are, then I defer to your right to criticize)
Also--it seems a little churlish to carp when the man IS acknowledging his sexuality. Better late than never. He still deserves the fruit basket and discount coupons from the Welcome Committee, IMO.
Addi, I guess I wasn't clear. I'm not harping on, or blaming Nabors. I'm saying that it annoys me that we live in a climate where a victim of oppression is made to feel they are the ones who have to apologize for hiding from the oppression. I totally applaud Nabors and whatever he feels he needs to do to deal.
Ah. Understood and in full agreement.
Cavil withdrawn--carry on...

of course, there was the totally bogus story about Nabors and Rock Hudson marrying in the 1970's.
Here's how the rumor started: There was a group of friends in Hollywood that used to throw elaborate "theme parties". They had the idea of doing a gay wedding party. They came up with the names of two celebrities they knew to be gay, but would NEVER be an actual couple. Rock and Jim fit the bill perfectly. They printed up fancy invitations and sent them out to their circle of friends.
One of thses invitations ended up in the hands of gossip columknist Rona Barrett, who was unaware that it was a joke. She printed this "blind item" in her column:
"What two male Hollywood stars are planning a gay wedding? Hints: One is a handsome leading man who's strong as the ROCK of Gibraltar; The other's a good ole country boy who's like your next door NEIGHBOR."
Hudson reportedly reacted by saying, "That's ridiculous - everyone knows I prefer young blonde guys!"

When Rock Hudson died some journalish called Nabors for comment and he said something like, "I NEVER KNEW THE GUY I NEVER KNEW THE GUY!!"
I always cut slack for actors and others whose careers were in full swing many years before Stonewall. Plus, the partner was a firefighter when Nabors met him. I have the same taste as Gomer Pyle!
I think it's tiresome when people say "Oh everybody knew that." The beautiful thing in all these coming-out stories is that another soul is free from the bondage of dishonesty.
It's not sad that he "finally" came out or that he came out "after all these years" or that "everyone knew that." What would be sad would be if an 82-year-old gay person died without ever knowing a moment of peace.
Silence = Suicide, whether actual suicide or a suicide of the soul. Let's celebrate speaking to truth instead.
Im glad he did it on his terms... when he felt it was time, instead of bowing to political pressure. its no one elses bizniz if /when a person comes out.

Completely agree with you, PJ (and Namo). I honestly did think he had come out years ago. Good for him.
