Joe Scarborough To Norm Coleman

The drumbeat is growing louder for former Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman to drop his long-shot appeal of the state's prolonged recount.
In the wake of a three-judge panel declaring that Al Franken was the leading vote-getter of the U.S. Senate election, MSNBC's Joe Scarborough offered a preemptive and withering criticism of Coleman's likely appeal of that decision to the state Supreme Court.
"Seriously. Norm, I like you. You lost. Okay," he said. "Can we seat a senator so Amy [Klobuchar] doesn't have to do the job of two Senators? It is seriously not fair to constituents in Minnesota to drag this out any longer. It is over Norm, okay. It is over."

"so when the gop does it they are thieves and when the democrats do it, they are protecting the sanctity of the election process?"
Whenever anyone does it, they're putting their personal agenda and the agenda of their party ahead of the needs of their constituents. Is he within his rights to do what he's doing? Of course. Would Franken behave differently if the results were reversed? Probably. Would Franken behave differently if the results were reversed and the respective situations of the parties were reversed? Perhaps not.

When did the Democrats do this? Papa, are you really defending Coleman here? Seriously? Really? Really?

I seem to recall that Al Gore, the Democrat who had the most reason to do it, stepped aside for the good of the country.
Too bad Norman Coleman and the Republic Party doesn't have the same respect for the State of Minnesota or the United States Senate.
#16one man's sour grapes is another man's justice
Posted: 4/14/09 at 3:18pmTo be fair, Gore 'stepped aside' after he lost in the SCOTUS. He was very gracious after that. While I agree that Coleman and the Republican party are being selfish and showing complete disregard for the people of Minnesota, I don't know that Florida 2000 is a good example to use.
#17one man's sour grapes is another man's justice
Posted: 4/14/09 at 3:19pmso coleman should step aside. as soon as the supreme court rules on this case.

If the Supreme Court does not rule in Coleman's favor who will he take the fight to then? Oh, and who is paying for all this? Coleman has said he does not have the money yet he and Franken have racked up legal fee's because of Coleman's childish Stubborness. The court has ruled in Franken's favor.Norm Coleman is committing political suicide and is screwed if he ever runs for public office again.
Its SO OBVIOUS the Republicans do not want to seat a Democrat and are stalling for as long as possible. How petty can you be?This is SO UNFAIR to the people of Minnesota I want t hear from the people and hear what they think of Norm's latest move.

Posted: 4/14/09 at 3:39pmas mb pointed out, this is pretty much his last stand: he'll have lost to jesse the body and stuart smalley. if he loses here, he's done in politics. oh sure he'll try to run again, but he won't even be able to win a gop primary.

At some point, if Coleman wants to pursue to the SCOTUS, he may actually be putting Pawlenty in a difficult position. Minnesota law says:
"In case of a contest, an election certificate shall not be issued until a court of proper jurisdiction has finally determined the contest."
Sounds vague, right? However, a ruling by the Minnesota Supreme Court earlier this years states:
"a certificate of election cannot be issued until the state courts have finally decided an election contest."
So, if the Minnesota Supreme Court rules in favor of Franken, Pawlenty will be pressured to certify the election and have Franken seated. At that point, Coleman will have to weigh the value of keeping Franken out of the senate vs possibly hurting Pawlenty.
