I abhor John Edwards.
As I've said before, I am related to an ob/gyn. That ob/gyn is not only serving for a 12th year on a State Medical Board, but also is currently on the Federation of State Medical Boards (which is the national board that governs all state boards), teaches at a medical school, and is also serving as chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology in the women's health department of that university. He is an amazing doctor, specializing in infertility, and people come from other states (and even other countries) to be under his care.
In all his years as a doctor, only one thing has ever gone wrong.
In the 1980s, a woman (not one of his patients) came in to the hospital for an emergency delivery. She was a drug dealer who had a long history of cocaine abuse. She went into cardiac arrest during labor, due to the strain on her heart from said drug abuse. Against all odds, my relative was somehow able to deliver the baby completely unharmed. He then spent over an hour pushing on this woman's heart, trying to revive her. Despite his best efforts, she didn't make it.
Her family sued for $25 million dollars, stating that it was a malpractice case. The parents said that their daughter died due to completely to the doctor's negligence, which is a false statement. The lawyer they hired had very similar tactics to Mr. Edwards (he is actually a friend of the senator), and the family won a great deal of money on a case that had no merit by playing to the emotions of the jury.
Sadly, this kind of case is far from a rarity. And from the research I've done, it seems that these are exactly the kinds of cases that John Edwards chooses to fight: ones that shouldn't be won (so that he can charge more) but involve medical facts that the average jury member is not familiar with (because he can use more charm than fact in his case).
Just because people are well-spoken and convincing, that does not mean they are right. It is charismatic lawyers like John Edwards that hurt the practices of some of the best doctors in the country, all for the sake of money.
In his speech last night, he spoke about putting more responsibility on lawyers in malpractice cases. What he really means is that the persecuting lawyers should be given more power.
Maybe you don't see where I'm coming from here, but I don't want a person like that in office. He's manipulative and out to serve his own best interests. He's very willing to fight battles that should not be fought, putting people that have done no wrong in very bad positions.
Dick Cheney may not be the most charismatic, charming, happy, or honest man in the world, but at least he makes more arguments based on facts than on trying to play off of people's emotions. And while I will be making my vote based on the Presidential candidates over the Vice Presidential ones, the fact that Kerry chose him as a running mate does not speak highly of his ability to judge character. If he becomes president, I worry about who he would appoint to the cabinet and the supreme court.
I starred in a short film called
Magnetic Personality. Check it out!
