I'm not sure how I didn't know this was coming out, but the trailer was released today and it look fantastic.
So happy to see Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof in something again.

I've been excited to see this, though I have to say from the trailer it seems like maybe not everyone in it has a feel for the language.

Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson's version is one of my favorite films. I don't know if I could dig the modern setting of this.

I love the KenMa version too, but I can't wait to see the new one.

There's pretty much no way to make the Hero/Claudio story palatable without outright changing the plot, and I'm not sure I can unsee Amy Acker as a psychopath after watching Person of Interest, but I'm still such a sucker for this play I'll probably end up watching this in the theater anyway.
In the meantime, I'm trying to resist the urge to rewatch the Damian Lewis/Sarah Parish modern-language version, which was adorable. (I did a rewatch of the Thompson/Branagh one a couple of weeks ago.)
I love the feel for the language shown in the trailer. The articulation is simple, persuasively contemporary while respectful of the meter, and has authority and intelligence. The question is whether that refreshing lack of pretension can be sustained through the film. If it can, it might just be a major achievement.

A friend of mine who is a big Joss Whedon fan saw it at the Toronto International Film Festival and she loved it. She plans on dragging me to see it when it comes out in theatres but I'm not too eager. I'm not a fan of the whole Shakespearean language in a modern setting thing

Isn't that how it was done originally?

Don't care. Shakespeare, Josh Whedon, his place, his people, shot basically on a whim - I'm in.
i wonder how Cordelia and Willow feels about Wesley and Fred hooking up...
Sorry for the bump but, after seeing this, I think I've found my favorite movie of the year. As a Shakespeare nerd (curse of the English major, what can I say?), it was a stellar adaptation. The cuts were hardly noticeable and didn't affect the plot or quality at all. The acting was top-notch (surprise, surprise), especially from Alexis Denisof (Benedick) and Amy Acker (Beatrice). Nathan Fillion had a lot of fun with Dogberry, one of the dumbest and funniest characters in Shakespeare. But from a modern perspective, it really is the perfect romantic comedy. It was truly everything I hoped for.
And, as an aside, no Angel fan could resist the delight of seeing Wesley and Fred actually getting a happy ending :)
But seriously, cannot oversell this movie. In the sea of crappy wannabe blockbusters (looking at you, Lone Ranger!) and better but still loud and huge blockbusters, this is a welcome respite of wit and human relationships.

I thought the movie was delightful. It took me a few minutes to get with the dialogue, but after the first scene, I was hooked. Whedon makes movie making look so easy. Besides the actors noted above, I loved Reed Diamond. I loved him on Journeyman, and I hope this gets him more work.
Solid work all around.
I thought it was fine movie, but uneven. Amy Acker was great, but Alexis Denisof didn't really do it for me. I had just seen Jonathan Cake's delightful performance a few months ago and it blew Denisof's rather mild interpretation out of the water.
Fillion had one of the stronger grasps of the language and his scenes were the highlight.
The black and white helped cover up the low-budget nature of the filming and I liked the jazzy score.
I don't think it will go down as the ultimate adaptation of the play, but it was a pleasant enough diversion.

I loved the indie-rock versions of Shakespeare's songs. Hey nonny nonny.
I think Joss was trying to come up with a Wonder Woman script, then abandoned the project.

I very much enjoyed this version of Much Ado. Well acted throughout the cast and it was a lot of fun.
SO enjoyed this! Made for- what?- $10 bucks? But performances worth millions. Fillion made Dogberry a hoot but also reigned in the OTT so it worked. Loved all the physical comedy from Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker. They even managed to make the "kill Claudio" bit work. ( well ok almost- never really seen that work out) and i am in love w Greg Clark! Everyone's facility w the language was spot on. Joss Whedon- how can u not love a man who gets together w his pals to do Shakespeare readings in his home and then pulls a movie out of that to "relax" when he's shooting "Avengers"? Totally buying this when it comes out on DVD.
And yes he has a really nice house too!
