That was a strange way to end it.
And what the HELL was that Bear thing Fred Willard was narrating?

She was there on stage at the beginning of the second song. The band started playing Pieces of Me again, and then one of the tech guys in the back started playing the vocal track they use for her to lip synch to. She walked off stage, and the band continued playing, smirking at each other. Then they cut to the still of Jude, and to commercials.
I haven't laughed that hard at something that happened on SNL in a really long time. Heh.

fishergirl, how fleshed out was the vocal track? I wondered during her first number whether she was singing live or not.
Was this SNL's first Milli Vanilli moment?
God how mortifying! (And funny.)

From what I heard (I didn't see all of her first performance), she did what Britney Spears does - sang over a track of herself, but with her mic volume down reeeeeeeal low, and the backing track bumped up reeeeeal loud (which would account for the "echo" some people claim happened at the beginning of her first performance - she was singing at the same volume as the backing track).
As for the screw up, the vocals start out at the regular volume, and then whoever was working the track lowered it alot. However, if you listen, you can definitely still here it as her band is playing. Heh.
She was apparently supposed to sing her new single "Autobiography," which has a beginning very similar to Pieces of Me. I love how she blamed her band at the end of playing the wrong song. Gee, Ashlee, your voice started singing the wrong song, too! Even though the microphone was no where near your mouth...

God, how awkward. I did see her fiddling with an ear piece during her first song.
Honestly, though? How lame!! Anyone who's seen her MTV vanity project or Leno performance has heard her sounding flat and mediocre...I thought that was sort of the street cred of doing SNL in the first place--so people can hear you warts and all. It's not like she was doing any rigorous dancing or anything either! Yeah, I agreed that the blaming the band was not too cool...
Thanks for the info...

ugghh...what has happened to SNL? As usual..it sucked (how 'bout that Jane Eyre skit...just painful). The rerun of MadTV was much better...but had to wait until after the world series.
And for the record, Mr. Jude Law was not looking his best tonight.

Whoa, I just watched that.....and my speakers were off and I have to say that watching it w/o sound was HILARIOUS!!!! The expressions on her band's faces were priceless...and now I understand her "hoe-down" comment.
Wonder if heads will roll.

I would drink Jude Law's bath water!
I think the band WAS starting on the correct song--the wrong voice over made them instantly switch gears.
I think it SUCKS that anyone would lip sync on SNL.

Broadwayguy feels the need to comment further!!!!!!!
At the show closing, Ms Ashless "I got BUSTED" Simpson said that she apoligized for her band because they played the wrong song.
a.) If they started playing the wrong song, there was an entire intro where she would have known.
b.) The microphone was NO WHERE near her MOUTH which was NOT moving when you heard her voice.
Girl got busted BAD and Broadwayguy LOVED it.
